Good to see America in there as it hopefully means this tournament will be televised over here

All games are on espn and espn2, just like the Euros. I don't even think they are shipping any to that shitty channel espn classic. So you're good if you have basic cable. Unfortunately Mo Edu is out, and Beasley is, from what I've read on our forums, gone this summer so you guys won't have too much of a vested interested in us yanks for the first time in a while.

It'll be really exciting to see how the US plays against Italy and Brazil. If anything, the players will get to match with the best in the world.

I'm pretty happy with the squad, but so much depends on how Bob Bradley wants to set up the team. A 4-2-3-1 would suit me just fine.

FIFA Previews:

European champions Spain will be hoping to extend their long unbeaten run this Sunday when they face New Zealand in the teams' first Group A fixture. The All Whites will not be intimidated heading into the game in Rustenburg, though, after running world champions Italy mighty close in a midweek friendly.

The two sides, who share a section with hosts South Africa and Iraq, are both short at least one first-choice player for the FIFA Confederations Cup 2009. Missing for La Roja is midfield maestro Andres Iniesta, still suffering the effects of a thigh injury aggravated at the end of his extraordinary season with Barcelona. For their part, the Oceania champions are without their captain and defender Ryan Nelsen, who failed to recover in time from a calf injury.

The match

New Zealand-Spain, 14 June, 20:30 (local time), Rustenburg

On the face of it, the fixture would appear to pit Oceania's David against Europe's Goliath. After all, Spain have in their ranks some of game's finest proponents, players like Fernando Torres, Xavi Hernandez and Iker Casillas. In contrast, the bulk of the New Zealand squad is made up of home-based players with limited international experience.

Yet for all that, there was encouragement for both sides in their recent friendly performances in the build-up to the tournament. In another master class of attacking football, the Iberians brushed aside Azerbaijan 6-0 on Tuesday night in Baku, while, 24 hours later, the Oceania side caused quite a stir by putting three past world champions Italy, who had to come from behind to secure a nervy 4-3 win late on.

Key battle

David Villa vs. Shane Smeltz

The Spanish striker will not be in lacking in confidence heading into the tie after becoming the third-highest scorer in La Roja's history with his midweek hat-trick in Baku. With 28 international goals to his name, the Valencia man could even move a rung higher and overtake Fernando Hierro with a brace on Sunday in Rustenburg.

Villa's counterpart Smeltz has a few achievements of his own to be proud of, including recent OFC and Australian A-League Player of the Year awards. His goal against the Azzurri on Wednesday underlined his status as the Kiwi's most dangerous marksman and, though he cannot match the Spaniard in international standing, he clearly has what it takes to make an impression.

Looking back

Spain 13-0 New Zealand, 11 September 1997, FIFA U-17 World Cup Egypt 97, Ismailia

The only other meeting of the teams in any category occurred at U-17 level, in a game remembered for producing highest winning margin in the tournament's history. Spain's Iker Casillas and New Zealand's Ben Sigmund are the only survivors from that day, though both watched the game from the bench.

The stat

32 - The number of consecutive games Spain have now gone unbeaten. Vicente del Bosque's charges are now just three away from equalling the longest unbeaten sequence of all time, a record currently held by Brazil.

Did you know?

New Zealand are the tallest team in the competition, averaging an impressive 1.85m. The Kiwis will literally be towering over the likes of Santi Cazorla (1.69m) and Xavi Hernandez (1.70), the shortest two members of the Spanish squad.

The quote

"We're here as reigning European champions, but we have the utmost respect for our opponents. We're taking on the role of favourites and hope to do as well as we can," Iker Casillas, Spain goalkeeper.

"Everyone realises the opportunity a game like this offers us. A decent result against the number one team in the world would really put us on the map, and that's something which is long overdue. We can't just be happy to be the best in Oceania,"Chris Killen, New Zealand striker.

Have your say

Could New Zealand surprise everyone and end Spain's long unbeaten run?

South Africa will be desperate to satisfy an expectant host nation when they battle Asian champions Iraq in the opening game of the FIFA Confederations Cup on Sunday. There is a renewed sense of belief in the Bafana Bafana camp that they will be able to use this competition as a springboard to success, but they face a tough first hurdle against a team determined to atone for their failure to qualify for next year's FIFA World Cupâ„¢.

The match

South Africa-Iraq, 14 June, 16:00 (local time), Johannesburg

Iraq will be undeterred by their status as underdogs. After all, they are used to defying the odds, as they did throughout their triumphant AFC Asian Cup 2007 campaign. Forward Younis Mahmoud is the biggest name in a side that prides itself on an impressive work ethic.

In his 14-month tenure at the South Africa helm, Joel Santana has consistently told his doubters to judge him at the FIFA Confederations Cup. Victory over Iraq would be a step in the right direction, and this will likely depend on whether Bora Milutinovic's charges can nullify the genius of Steven Pienaar and Teko Modise.

Key battle

Steven Pienaar (RSA) vs. Nashat Akram (IRQ)

Since his move to English Premier League side Everton, Steven Pienaar has re-emerged as an exciting playmaker and influential member of the South Africa squad. He will now look to employ his innovation, off-the-ball movement and knack of scoring crucial goals to undo Iraq.

Iraq's hopes rest heavily on rising star Nashat Akram. Boosted by his recent move to Dutch side Twente, he brings stability to the midfield. Talented and industrious, he is expected to provide the likes of Mahmoud with quality passes.

Looking back

The meeting at Ellis Park will be the first competitive match between South Africa and Iraq.

The stat

24 - With an average age of 24 years and eight months, Iraq's squad is the FIFA Confederations Cup's youngest.

Did you know?

The Ellis Park Stadium, nicknamed the 'House of Pain', hosted the 1995 Rugby World Cup final, which was won by South Africa. It will also host the final of the FIFA Confederations Cup on 28 June.

The quotes

"We have three games and if we win against Iraq, we will have a lot of confidence. That is what we are aiming at," South Africa coach Joel Santana.

"We have tried our best to prepare the team for the FIFA Confederations Cup despite the short period that we had. Our team have good players who are skilful, and I'm really optimistic that we can deliver good performances in the tournament," Iraq coach Bora Milutinovic.

South Africa's readiness for the 2010 World Cup comes under a stark spotlight in June's Confederations Cup.

Even though the two-week tournament is being played at just four of the 10 venues being used for next year's showpiece, it is an opportunity for the country to assuage the fears of the skeptical and reassure visitors they are in for a fiesta with a difference in 12 months.

The tournament also has the potential to boost domestic interest, which is not at the fever pitch initially expected and is flagging on the back of the national side's feeble performances of late.

For FIFA, evolving the Confederations Cup from a World Cup dress rehearsal into a stand-alone event with its own competitive credibility is its greatest challenge.

A field that includes Brazil, Italy and Spain should provide much lubrication in achieving its goals, but it will also depend on how seriously the three heavyweights decide to take the tournament.

Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque has said he sees the fortnight as an ideal opportunity to initiate his side into South African conditions ahead of a World Cup for which the European champions look almost certain to qualify.

Whether Brazil and Italy are of the same conviction will become evident when they name their squads just ahead of the event but, even if they are at full strength, will their leading players treat the Confederations Cup as a post-season safari or a serious contest?

For the rest of the field, the tournament also provides a forum to achieve vastly different objectives. South Africa needs confidence and a morale booster, plus valuable international competition.

New Zealand play in October and November in World Cup qualifying play-offs, so a minimum of three competitive games in South Africa, plus three friendlies in preparation, is a rare luxury for a side light on regular international fixtures.

The USA can experiment with a few combinations, given they are on course for World Cup qualification, but Egypt urgently need to find some new talent if they are to make the 2010 tournament.

Iraq, already out of the running for the World Cup, qualified for the Confederations Cup after their fairy-tale triumph at the last Asian Cup but have made many changes since in a typical overreaction to disappointing results. The eight competitors make up a disparate field, but the possibility of some ill-matched contests have been limited by a draw that has Iraq and New Zealand paired in the same group.

As World Cup hosts, South Africa has had a tough job in spinning its potential in an attempt to persuade the doubters. After all, this is a country that has had to deal with Afro-pessimism and a perception of incompetence carried by a continent whose coup d'etats, famines and conflicts are often the only news to which the rest of the world is exposed.

Added to this is a high rate of violent crime which creates a perception of anarchy.

Part two tomorrow...

Team-by-team guide to the Confederations Cup

With the flare of Brazil, World Cup holders Italy and the number one ranked side on the globe Spain in attendance, the Confederations Cup is a must-see tournament - Starts 14th June

LOC) Sunday 14 June 2009

A few hours before kick-off and Ellis Park stadium is bustling as final preparations are put in place for Africa's first major FIFA tournament.

There is hardly an idle sole in sight as people move in and out of offices, corridors, marquees, loading vans and sections of the stadium making sure that everything is in order.

Caterers are taking platters of food up to the VIP areas, volunteers are reporting to their posts, security personnel are briefing stadium ushers, cleaners are mopping and sweeping, media officials are doing their technical checks and technicians are attending to last minute cabling and connecting.

Arguably the most important preparations taking place this morning are those on the pitch. Since 06h00 the maintenance staff have been walking the length and breadth of the field double checking that the morning fog has not damaged the field lines and ensuring that South Africa and Iraq will be playing on a world-class surface this afternoon at the 16h00 kick-off.

Traditionally a rugby pitch, Ellis Park has been expertly converted into a world-class football field and for pitch expert, Professor Ronnie Schloss, who has been overseeing the process, it is all systems go for the FIFA Confederations Cup.

"We've had a land surveyor check that the pitch complies with FIFA standards. Everything is in order and we are ready to officially hand over the pitch to the LOC at 11h00 today."

As the morning progresses and Johannesburg's winter sunshine warms the Ellis Park precinct, anticipation begins to brew. The readiness is seen in the faces of cooks, security personnel, volunteers, sports administrators, journalists, venue managers, technicians, Organising Committee staff and FIFA officials.

Beyond the stadium soccer fans across the country are waking up to a new day - the day on which the first FIFA Confederations Cup to be hosted on African soil officially begins.

South Africa is ready!

That was a downright typo, calm yourself.

Btw, it was also not a fortnight but 9 days. Not a fan of hyperbole.

Who do you think will win the trophy

My money, literally, is on Italy.

I reckon Brazil will. They'll turn it on when they really need to. Can't wait for the inevitable Spain vs Brazil game!
