I know to you it might seem something of a minority (as has been discussed before), but the facts are Rangers do have a significant amount of supporters who are involved with these groups.

Perhaps you could start a thread about your local group, but don't expect too much of a response to The Shirtlifters and Spunkswallowers Annual Bumday Bash.

The main parade in Scotland by one of the Protestant Loyal Orders has been banned amid police concerns over public safety.

In a highly unusual and significant move, the Royal Black Chapter, essentially an elite wing of the Orange Order which it is affiliated to, has been prevented from holding its annual demonstration in Dumbarton, after Strathclyde Police said its risk assessment of violence and disruption was "high".

At a meeting of West Dunbartonshire Council yesterday, recommendations of a change to the time of the parade, which was scheduled to include 44 bands and attract thousands of onlookers, and the route were rejected.

advertisementOne of the matters raised was the behaviour of a local Loyalist flute band, The Pride of the Rock, at a parade in Dumbarton four years ago.

Two local councillors also lodged formal objections to the parade after consultations with their constituents.

It is understood that the procession is one of the most significant Loyal Order parades to have been refused permission in Scotland.

The matter is being immediately appealed by the Royal Black Chapter, with a hearing scheduled for Dumbarton Sheriff Court on Thursday.

Last night a West Dunbartonshire spokeswoman said: "In coming to their decision, the committee considered police advice that, if granted, the parade would cause a substantial risk to public order and public safety, and a high risk of community disruption. They also considered risks identified as a result of the behaviour of the Pride of the Rock Flute Band during a procession in Dumbarton in 2005. While fully considering the organisers human right of free speech and peaceful assembly, the committee was of the view that prohibition of the march was the only proportionate response to take."

The move has incensed the Royal Black Chapter, which said it first lodged an application to hold its annual Scottish parade, which is rotated between 11 venues, last September.

The organisation's deputy grand master, James McLean, said: "This has caused us more than a few problems. We dispute the view of Strathclyde Police that the parade presents a threat to public order. It is held in Strathclyde areas 10 years out of every 11 and there's never been an issue.

"The Royal Black Chapter is not the threat, we had nothing to do with the Pride of the Rock and do not support sectarianism, fascism or racism as was alleged at the meeting."

An online petition has already appeared, claiming that "a campaign to ban the parade is being co-ordinated by the deeply sinister and sectarian bigots of the Republican Sinn Fein organisation which has a branch operating in the town".

Concluding his objections at the meeting, Dumbarton councillor Geoff Calvert said: "I urge you to refuse this application on the grounds of the threat of severe disruption to the well-being of the citizens of Dumbarton."
