Boab 73 Posted August 4, 2009 Share Posted August 4, 2009 Not doubting his quality but I would like to ask your view of where Steven Gerrard should be played. In recent times for Liverpool he's been played in front of a 2 behind the front-man usually Mascherano and Alonso or given a free role starting from the wing. It doesn't seem as if Rafa Benitez 'trusts' Gerrard to play in the midfield 4 or maybe its more aptly because Rafa is using his Valencia system with Gerrard playing the equivalent of where Pablo Aimar did in that system? Or do you like him in that free role type role? Personally, I feel its almost a shame that he isn't in a midfield 4 pushing on as he has all the attributes of a modern central midfielder with his tackling, engine, passing, shooting to name but a few. Juno 2 Posted August 4, 2009 Share Posted August 4, 2009 The attacking midfield role in Rafa's 4-2-3-1 of last season was absolutely perfect for him. If you've got two great defensive minded all round players (Alonso/Mascherano) and give him that fully creative free role he will, and did, run riot. With Gerrard in a 4-4-2 there would need to be a seriously great defensive mid supporting him in there and he would end up in the way of one of the strikers. Kris Boyd gets panned for what he does to his body so why should the animal that is gerrard not get panned! he should not be able to play for liverpool as he should be in jail and if thats not a tactical point of view then I dont no what is? Alonso protected him at Liverpool by providing cover when he went walkabout but it is safer for Liverpool that he plays as a second striker or just behind the strikers rather than having responsibility for defensive work.This also means that Liverpool can benefit from his diving and cheating which because he is english is described as cleverly taking advantage of a situation. He has great vision to go with his wonderful passing, a fantastic shot and a great touch. Alright he has a dive occasionally but doesn't everyone in the game these days? His freekick against villa at the start of the season a few seasons ago was sublime. And he should not be in jail no previous crimes and it was the DJ's fault if Gerrard owned the sound card then he should have been allowed to choose the music not the DJ.
