The Arabs and football

Recommended Posts

Where does this end? Is it a good thing? Is it a bad thing? Does it matter?

It seems like they are going to just keep investing in our sport to the point it will become saturated with Arab ownership and in turn shape the way the game is run.

On a side note, I dunno why I find it so funny that Al-Ittihad made Benzema get his Balllon d’Or out in front of the full stadium for his player presentation

It's a bad thing.

Saudi Arabia own 4 teams fully in their league now, but realistically they own the whole league and are investing billions into it.

Saudi Arabia are also the ones funding the African Super League.

With the Club World Cup starting in a couple years, if suddenly 16 of the 32 teams are owned by Saudi Arabia and they have invested enough money for those to be big clubs with huge names, that competition will become big, with them owning half of it.

Add to that they are bidding for the 2030 and/or 2034 world cup. This isn't China v2. This is a very different thing.

So...a bit like MLS where all 30 teams are owned by the same company?

It's the China from 10 years ago. Signing semi retirees looking for one last big pay out. Some had the same fears that China was going to overtake some European leagues. It never made a dent.

Fact is, nobody outside the country or even Europe is remotely interested in their clubs or league. It'll pass in a few years I reckon. Nobody on here could name a club from China or Saudi correctly without googling, that's the difference, nobody gives a fuck in Europe, and without the support and TV money/merch etc, it'll dwindle out when the rich owners see their pissing money away for little return.

Pretty much this tbh. Once PIF realise the money isn’t in bringing highly-paid semi-retired players over, they’ll probably go down the City Football Group path

No not at all.

MLS run an investor-operator model where each team has a single investor and the league owns teams and players contracts to ensure costs are controlled and the league is profitable.

The government doesn't pour billions of dollars into it.
