Strachan blasts ref for decisions they didnt get :usnure: <cr>

Is this clown for real?

GORDON STRACHAN last night told referee Charlie Richmond to spend his extra wages on a video recorder - so he could look back at his mistakes at Tannadice.

The Parkhead boss spoke out despite the whistler turning down a blatant penalty for Dundee United in yesterday's draw with Celtic.

But Tannadice manger Craig Levein let off the official, who hobbled off in the second half with what will be the most bizarre injury of the season, because he could not bear to think it was anything other than an honest mistake.

An entertaining match ended in a 1-1 draw but Richmond was the big talking point because he turned down United's appeals for a spot-kick while they were trailing 1-0.

Gary Caldwell clearly brought down Roy O'Donovan inside the box, although Strachan claimed the United striker repeatedly fouled Stephen McManus.

And two minutes after the penalty controversy, Richmond fell over Shunsuke Nakamura's head and was carried from the field to be replaced by Iain Brines. X-rays revealed ankle ligament damage and he will be back in two to three weeks.

Asked whether he expected the referee to award a penalty after Caldwell's challenge on O'Donovan, Strachan said: "No, because I was convinced he was going to give a free-kick before it for their number 10, not for the first time, not even looking at the ball when he jumped into Mick.

"I'm sure referees with their extra few pounds can buy a video and watch things like this."

Two weeks ago Levein was fined s5000 for his rant at Mike McCurry after a game with Rangers at Ibrox and didn't even entertain the thought Richmond's decision was anything other than an honest mistake.

Levein said: "I haven't seen it but I'm told by other people it was a blatant penalty. I like Charlie. I think he's a decent referee. At least it was only one mistake inside the penalty box today. I've got to put that down as an error. The alternative doesn't bear thinking about.

"If I can't speak my mind about this club where I'm an employee and spokesman, if I can't come out after a game when we've had five blatant decisions go against us, then I shouldn't be doing my job.

"I'll speak out if I feel we've been treated in an unfair manner. But I have to put today's error down to just that."

Aside from complaints about decisions, both managers agreed it was a good game.

Celtic took an early second-half lead through Paul Hartley before Francisco Sandaza grabbed a deserved equaliser.

Strachan said: "It was a terrific game, a great advert for Scottish football. The players controlled themselves, which was good when you consider the pace.

"It could be a good point. You never know. It was a good performance after last week. We made more chances, looked livelier and the game was better. We had the opportunity to finish the game and didn't take it.

"Mark Wilson was the best man on the pitch. He started excellently and became unbelievable."

Strachan dismissed a suggestion he was set to make a move to sign Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre on loan.

But when asked whether he could nail the rumour Shaun Maloney was heading back to Celtic Park, the manager said: "I don't need to nail anything. I'll leave you guys to guess.

"With all the names put forward, there are going to be one or two which are right."

Levein was pleased to see his side bounce back after their horror show against Hamilton. He said: "The big pluses were the improved performances, particularly in defence, and the return of Craig Conway. Francisco Sandaza is also getting fitter."

Chesney gets beaten up in Corrie this week I think it did some permanent damage :craphead:

Watching their game yesterday,i was left INFURATED by the BLATANT cheating of not one but TWO referees! utd were denied FOUR stonewall penalties but i see the press have swept 3 of them under the carpet this morning. thats only two games into the new season and they have been GIFTED 4 points!! :angry2: looks like were gonna have to put up with this on a weekly basis.

have to say it is worrying hope someone is keeping count of this. Look at the effect the chalked off

Aberdeen goal and the extremely dodgy free kick against St Mirrin had on the outcome last season

they say its swings and roundabouts and it balances itself off over a season but I don't see it at the moment

CELTIC'S TITLE HOPES HIT BY INJURY

Celtic's hopes of retaining the SPL championship took a serious dent on Saturday when their leading referee, Charlie Richmond, suffered an injury and had to be carried off. His manager Gordon Strachan said after the match, "It was a bad blow for the big man and it definately cost us 2 points as Charlie had said any United goal would have been chalked off. We're not sure how long he'll be out, but it looks serious. We might need to buy another one before long and make sure we get the decisions we don't deserve".
