We could face Pressley on Sunday

Steven Pressley has been offered the chance to make a shock return to the SPL with Inverness Caledonian Thistle and the former Scotland captain could face Rangers when they head for the Highlands on Sunday.

The 35-year-old had been considering an approach to play in Switzerland's top flight when the opportunity arose to remain in Scotland. He has been a free agent since leaving Danish Superliga outfit Randers FC when their season ended last month.

Pressley hasn't played competitively since Randers' last match on Dec 7 but Celtic manager Gordon Strachan has allowed him to use the champions' training facilities at Lennoxtown in order to maintain his fitness levels.

Although he was brought on to the national team's coaching staff by Scotland manager George Burley, Pressley has always maintained that he wanted to continue playing for as long as possible.

He won 33 caps for his country and is the only player to win the Scottish Cup with three different clubs – Rangers, Hearts and Celtic.

Under-fire Thistle manager Craig Brewster is desperate to plug the holes in a defence which has shipped 11 goals in their last four outings and which has failed to keep a clean sheet in any of the 22 matches since their opening day

2-0 win at Aberdeen.

An approach was made to the veteran on Hogmanay and he has asked for time to discuss the move with his family.

Inverness are above bottom club Hamilton Accies only on goal difference and Brewster hopes that Pressley's experience and ability to organise will tighten them up at the back and help stop the rot of five successive defeats.

It is understood that Pressley may also have been offered a coaching role as part of the package to lure him north.

The thought of Steven Pressley linking up with Richard Hastings, Ross Tokely and the like is totally mouthwatering. The Caledonian Stadium really is the metropolis of aesthetically pleasing football.
