Cardiff close on Rangers' Burke

Recommended Posts

I personally rate Burke. I don't think there's another player in the squad who on his day can beat players like Burke does. If he keeps injury free I think we'll regret selling him.

You get League Two players in England fetching more than 150k.

Burke would tear up League Two.

Then fall and hurt himself. You got to remember, we're getting rid of people, not only for the transfer fee, but to clear up wages. 250k i'd happily take.

Some our fans really don't have any knowledge of football. Burke is utter gash and on top of that he is injury prone, so £250000 is a good deal for us. Same goes for McCulloch, I would be delighted with £250000 for him...only a complete clown would ever pay the likes of £2.5 million for McCulloch....hold on...wait a minute....

Former Ger Burke tipped for a star turn at Cardiff

Ross McCormack has revealed how he helped broker Chris Burke’s Ibrox escape to the Coca-Cola Championship when asked for a character reference on the Rangers winger by his boss.

The 25-year-old winger flew south yesterday for transfer talks with Cardiff City and later underwent a medical.

McCormack expects his fellow Murray Park graduate to today join the Welsh club’s crusade to reach the English Premier League in time for a move to a new stadium in August.

And he believes Burke, who scored on his Rangers debut against Kilmarnock at 18 and once starred in a television documentary called Blue Heaven, can make an impact in English football’s second tier after making the break from Glasgow.

‘Our manager, Dave Jones, has always had an inclination to look at players in Scotland, even before he signed me,’ said McCormack, who has scored 15 goals in 19 starts so far for Cardiff since his move from Motherwell.

‘Steven Thompson left us for Burnley but Kevin McNaughton and Gavin Rae have done very well here and play every week.

‘The gaffer had a word with us about Chris because he just wondered about his attitude since he’d been out the picture for a while at Rangers. I just told him right away that Burkey’s attitude was great.’

Jones appears to have been convinced. Burke is set to join Alan Gow at Wolves in the Championship promotion race and McCormack is convinced he will benefit after ending almost a decade at Ibrox.

‘Let’s be honest, his time was up at Rangers,’ said McCormack.

‘He has had some good times and, three years ago, was heavily involved in the team

when Alex McLeish took us into the last 16 of the Champions League to face Villarreal.

‘But the way they play now, without too much width, has ensured he has not had too many chances.

‘I think he can be a real star in this league down here.

‘Chris has a good turn of pace but there’s a bit more to him than that. He has a lot of

ability, he can turn defenders and he can score goals as well coming in off the flank.

‘I personally think he should still be in the Rangers team at the moment but that has

not happened for him for a while.

‘He’s better off making a break and I think he has been impressed with what he has seen here and what Cardiff City have to offer.

‘I spoke to him at the training ground on Thursday morning and he was keen on the

idea of the transfer. Our facilities are not quite Murray Park, but there’s a lot happening here with the new stadium being built.

‘The idea is that it will be ready for the first day of next season and everyone here has the ambition to make that in the Premiership. We’re in the hunt for the play-off places or maybe even an automatic slot. It is a very tight league.

‘I think Chris will fit in well for us because we have been playing 4-4-2 with two wide

guys. Peter Whittingham has been playing on the right but he is left-footed, so there could be an opportunity there for Burkey to get into the team.’

Burke scored the winner in a Murray Park bounce game against Morton on Wednesday afternoon as he sought to hone his fitness.

A brief run at Inverness last Sunday as a substitute saw him create Kris Boyd’s second goal against Caley Thistle. Probably neither player thought then quite how the

week would unfold.

Ironically, Sportsmail understands Walter Smith initially believed Birmingham boss Alex McLeish would come in for Burke rather than Boyd. Instead it was Jones who moved to sign the winger, who only had five months left on his existing Rangers contract.

‘I think it will take a wee while for him to get up to full fitness,’ added McCormack, who is liable to make George Burley’s squad for February’s Scotland get together.

‘I found that the Championship is probably even faster and more demanding than the

SPL. We have league games every single midweek and, when you throw in the cup-ties, it is a heavy schedule.

‘You have to be pretty fit and sharp to survive but Chris has always been a good trainer.’

Burke was a will o’ the wisp winger when he burst on the scene at Rangers when McLeish handed him his debut as a substitute in a 5-0 win over Kilmarnock in February 2002.

He replaced Andrei Kanchelskis in a line-up that also included stars like Stefan Klos and Arthur Numan and, within seconds, fired in a debut goal.

But a series of illnesses and injury problems over the last three years seriously limited his first- team exposure and Smith never seemed too convinced, even though he gave him that Scotland bow in Japan when he scored twice as a substitute in a 5-1 victory over Bulgaria.

Boyd netted two in the same game and their careers remained intertwined right up to last Sunday in the Highlands. Then it all began to unravel.

On what basis is Burke, who is injury prone, often very poor, just recovering from injury and hardly featured for us for two years, worth any more than £150k?

To be honest i'd rather he went for free, seeing him go for £150k from a team like us is just embarrassing.

I have to agree Mac but he is making 12000 per week. Get out of here.
