If you can take comfort from winning the odd cup here and there when we have won one title in the last 13 years then crack on and enjoy it. I’m just being completely honest. Had we went out the cup before now the attitude would’ve been it doesn’t matter the league is the most important thing, we can fully concentrate on that now. Now we’ve fucked the league Cups are meaningful again. 

I don’t really look at historic achievements as a measure. I care more about the here and now. I suppose I may feel different if we were winning league titles on a regular basis, every other year or that or maybe a couple in a row (we can dream)but while we have one league title in 13 years I have just stopped caring about winning the cups. The league is the overriding benchmark of a team being successful or not in Scotland. The Scottish Cup or cup double are maybe a decent consolation when we know we’ll be straight back in the fight the following year for the title. They just seem meaningless at the moment but pretty much all we can muster.  Clearly an unpopular opinion but my opinion nonetheless. 

A month ago he was outstanding but looks to have chucked it. Wouldn’t surprise if it’s to do with contract negotiations.

You seem to be awfully sensitive about somebody not sharing your opinion. At this moment in time winning Cups means fuck all and is no consolation to our abysmal league record. That’s just my honest opinion. Nothing against people that don’t see it the same way and want to celebrate it as they see fit.

This is the bit I don’t necessarily agree with. The most successful managers in our history didn’t have the greatest records in the Scottish Cup given how dominant we were in the league over those periods and that didn’t define them or our club. I think Smith won it 4 times against his 11 titles. Their dominance in the league defined them. It looks like I’m in the minority but couldn’t care less about the Cups and the season should be classed as nothing more than a failure. Unless by some miracle we win the league.

I never said that it doesnt matter. Of course the league will always be the priority. But right now we dont look like serious contenders and i doubt it will be much different anytime soon. Not until most of the current players are gone anyways. But then again money are needed for new recruits and i doubt we have much left to play with. Which makes cup(s) the minimum requirement for a season and the more achievable one. We can forget the times when we were always favorites for the league. Those CL windfalls we gifted them for 3 years in a row will set us apart for the next 1-2-3 years most probably. 

Maybe that’s the difficult pill to swallow. Our recent lack of success in the league has clearly made the cups more meaningful to a big number of our support and the Club. There is a danger that if we try and kid ourselves that a cup double is a successful season and it’s just about winning trophies then that becomes an acceptable standard for our club. If we won the league we wouldn’t care less if they won the Scottish Cup and vice versa. 

There were times, back in 2008 for example, where most of us would argue losing the UEFA final and the League was devestating, with not much thought on the 2 cups weve won that year. Now times has changed and Rangers have won 3 trophies in the past 9 years since back in the SPL. Its not good enough and we should not take trophies for granted. Theres not many of them flying around lately. 

How did that work out the last time we won the Scottish Cup? 
 
Rangers is about being the top team in Scotland. Our history and success isn’t gauged on racking up League Cups and Scottish Cups it’s about being the dominant team in Scotland. So until we actually resemble that then I couldn’t care less about how many cups we win. Having a big party when we win a Scottish Cup is akin to that mob in the 90’s.

If we win both cups and they win the league which is the happier support? 

No he’s not but has definitely dropped by his standards. He was bossing games a month or two ago. Might be fatigue as he’s one that never gets a rest but his levels have dropped massively. 

Given our full backs are encouraged to get forward already that would be a more defensive formation. We don’t need 3 centre halves against teams in our league. It’s all about the players on the park. Tactics haven’t caused the last 2 performances it’s been the players on the park. I personally think it’s been the pressure that’s got to them. We just don’t have a winning mentality in that squad.

The big problem we have is that we don’t have the finances for a full rebuild in one season so replacing guys like Goldson and dare I say it Tav aren’t a priority. They are the same guys that let us down but I reckon most managers would see other areas as more of a priority. If Clement prioritises the forward areas in the summer then we wouldn’t have the money to replace them. I also think that Tav, Goldson and Lundstram are being highlighted as they are the senior squad members but ultimately our forward play is our biggest weakness. It’s a tough one as it’ll be hard for Goldson and Tav to change opinions now and would undoubtedly be blamed again next season, rightly or wrongly, but where is our money best spent. They are going to win a a league with a back four that has consisted of Scales, Welsh, Taylor and Ralston more weeks than not. Is defence our biggest issue? The problem is that they have a tag of losers that’ll be difficult to shake. 

I would but bot my decision. I’ve said all season to play him there. Made his name as a striker but reckon most managers thoughts are that he’s better than the other options out wide and playing Dessers up front is better than playing Wright or McCausland out wide. There is a bit of truth in that last part.
