News - Assembly News

Two recent media articles have caused much concern for Rangers fans. The first was an article by Michael Walker in the Daily Mail on 2 October and the second was an article by Graham Spiers in The Times on 5 October.

Colleagues in the Rangers Supporters Trust have liaised with the Assembly and the action taken is fully supported by the Assembly.

In the case of the Daily Mail, there has been direct communication with Michael Walker to the effect that he has been "sussed" and Rangers fans will look elsewhere for objective reporting. Walker has responded stating he made efforts to contact the Assemby (no record of any contact) as well as Ally McCoist, The Police Service of Northern Ireland, Strathclyde Police, Nil by Mouth and a Celtic Supporters Group but only had responses from Souness and Strathclyde Police. He stated he did not get the balance right in his article and "..should have made reference to the tiresome and offensive nature of some of Celtic fans' chanting..". He stated he would be in touch if he returned to the same subject.

Doesn't excuse the tone of his article but at least he conceded he did not get it right!

In the case of Spiers, given his previous record, the matter has been referred directly to the Club with a strong plea that "enough is enough" with this individual. There seems little to be gained by going public and crawling over old ground - there is clear evidence that this guy is out to damage us.

Whatever happened to the notion that these guys are there to report on the match?

The Assembly Committee will continue to try and improve media handling as we recognise how important it is to many fans. Our aim is to have a positive media relationship and promote the many good things that our fans can be proud of but we will work together with fans to tackle negative media where appropriate.

A fairly good release from the Assembly, taking further thier commitment at the recent fans forum that they would, where appropriate, defend the fans more from media attack.

Thoughts??

I think its a good article and response. its good to see someone stick up for our club and fans. Michael Walker we know is a Rangers hater and Speirs just keeps attacking our club every chance that he gets. And its about time our club takes action against Speirs who in my opinion should have been banned a long time ago.

Does anyone have a link to the first article ?

The trust are in bed with a journalist who has written the vast majority of anti rangers stories in the sun, i would urge caution if they are involving them, apart form that good release.

May be this one

EDIT- i'm positive this is the one

Fair enough but it just ignores the problems in the articles. There is problems with sectarian chanting that need adressed. I dont think that the Speirs article was that bad. I would rather the Assembly actually worked on the issues rather than just writing an article that is preaching to the converted

Good to see a response like this from the Assembly and that they are taking on the recommendations that were put to them at the Fans Forum.

It has to continue from here and hopefully they will be in a better position to force the club into acting on some of the scumbags in the media who are out to hurt the Rangers support and its reputation.

Well done. (tu)

Look, there is no doubt that we still have a way to go in order to eradicate the "FTP" chants and the use of the word "f****n" from our support. But in the last two years we have done remarkably well to eradicate this from the mainstream support to the extent where you will rarely hear either word at Ibrox.

The problem is that the media still focus on our deficiancies and jump on any excuse to put the boot into Rangers fans instead of commenting on the brilliant work being done by the support and club to leave sectarianism behind. That is what we find unacceptable and is why we need a strong Assembly to pressure these individuals into ending their campaign of slander against us.

And maybe then they will comment on how sectarianism is being fostered amongst the Celtic support and how their club are doing pretty much nothing to stamp it out. A level playing field is all we ask.

Spot on regarding the point about these media pricks actually reporting on the football and not the fans. The fans who also seek to make an issue about chants etc also should concentrate on the football. If it bothers anyone that much then find another team to support ?

Much as I commend the statement Id prefer the board at Rangers to come out and defend us, tell Speirs to GTF and come out with a statement of intent, we are getting 'rag dolled' at every turn by cunts like Speirs.

exactly, never will you hear a rangers fan state that the clubs support is free from sectarianism, and imo it will never be

but when news articles focus on OUR problems, while glossing over celtic's problems then we have a right to feel aggrieved

fine let them report our fans, but have a fucking go at the tim fans as well

and on another point, like someone else said, maybe the club coming out and actually releasing something, rather than supporters groups would be better, as at times it can look like were just spitting back at them, whereas if the club took action it would carry more weight behind it

I agree with your point. Speirs has every right as a reporter to comment on "sectarian chanting/singing". When he devotes a whole article, rather than a throwaway comment, to the filth at Celtic matches then I will accept his credentials as a media reporter.

Until then, his one sided and continuous attacks on Rangers alone give me the right to consider him a hypocrite and treat him with total contempt.

Best Thing for Rangers to do is to get CCTV of the alleged incident. If it didn't happen they have Spiers bang to rights.

They can then publicly humiliate the rheptile, and will have an excellent case for removing his press privileges.

Just need Walter to take the piss out of him again?

Anyone got an easy link to that incident?

That's not enough I'm afraid, although it did make many a Bear smirk.

Spiers should not be allowed the freedom of Ibrox or Auchenhowie until he can show some balance in his reporting.

By my reckoning, by the time he's balanced it out, he'll be at retirement age.

It was a tongue in cheek statement as I basically wanted to see that incident again.

What we really need though is someone to cut him down to size and preferably have reporters/newspapers, not necessary on our side but to give fair and balanced reports on all incidents.

I think that if we are to make any inroads with the media as a whole and we want to get our version of the story across then there is no point writing articles that only other Bears are going to read. This will not change other peoples opinions of us. These articles need to go out into the national press to have any real impact. We can write as many articles as we like on our websites and our Fanzines but it changes nothing, it does nothing. They should put these articles in the press by putting them in the papers as adverts. It is perfectly legal and would reach thousands of people. Unless the Assembly start to be more forward thinking thaen they will be just another blunt instrument.

Need to stop saying 'f****n' and the FTP stuff while Spiers is there. Eventually he'll report on it when it doesn't happen and he'll get caught out.

Once he's been found out and banned, we can start chanting 'Speirs is back in the chapel' or whatever.

Excellent idea! I get so frustrated with the media and the fact that we have no way to fight back and be heard. I was so angry about certain things that I suggested putting messages on billboards, a bit way out I know but I get so mad about it all and there's probably a law against that anyway! But yes, paying for advertising.......I hope someone from the Assembly reads this and takes note.

I've read some excellent articles on here but as you say they have to go out into the national press to make a real difference.

Here's hoping something can be done. (tu)
