Walter looking to bring someone in

Walter Smith has been given the green light to try to bring in new players as Pedro Mendes and Jerome Rothen prepare to leave Rangers.

The Light Blues have not paid money for a player since the main transfer window in 2008 and only brought in Rothen on loan from PSG last summer.

But with the Frenchman heading for Ankaragucu and Mendes bound for Sporting Lisbon in the next few hours, there is scope to bring in replacements.

It is likely Smith will look at bringing in reinforcements in areas other than central midfield due to the cover he has there already.

In particular, it seems he will seek a creative player to either play on the wing or just in behind his strikers.

And with three days to go until the January window closes, he has a race against time to do any deals he may want to conduct.

Smith said: "With Jerome away as well as Pedro, that will free up a little bit of money but we'll need to wait and see what happens.

"I won't take someone on unless it is someone I really feel can come in and make a little bit of a difference for us.

"It's not quite as simple as us having targets ready to come in. We had to move people out first and it has not been possible to just get others lined up.

"We can now at least have a little bit of a look around and if it doesn't come to anything, we'll just carry on in with what we have got.

"If you look at our squad, one area that's causing us a little bit of a problem more than anything is out on the wider areas of the pitch.

"We've had to mess Steven Davis around and ask him to go there from the middle. It's a role we could really be doing with someone filling."

Smith, meanwhile, does not expect any more players to leave Ibrox, despite speculation linking other members of his squad with moves.

True we haven't and we might not, but what Flecky is on about is that the papers were saying we wouldn't be able to bring anyone in at all.

We definitely need someone in the wide areas. In terms of creative ability in the middle we have Davis and Fleck as well as Edu/Thomson/McCulloch to play the holding role. A winger would be a great addition. I expect it to be a loan signing though

i would rather get boyd, novo, willson, fleck and broadfoot new contracts instead of wasting 1.5 million on shite

we shouldnt have to get rid of players just to keep others, we have a seperate budget for those players

we need something new and fresh
