What exactly is a walter smith signing?

Is it a Laudrup or a gascoigne?

An albertz or an amoruso?

A cuellar or a bougherra?

A mendes or a davis?

The amount of times i read he's just a walter smith signing makes me laugh.

To me, thats exactly what it is. A great signing. Other managers sign players (flo, etc..) but who has really made the signings of sir walter?

Clelland was decent for us....

Boli was a champions league winning french international.

Snelders was a good goalkeeper at the sheepshaggers

Weir? Are you serious? What a signing hes been!

Kenny miller? Dickhead shouldnt be playing for us, but what a player hes been for us, especially last season.

So once again what is a walter smith signing?

I'm saying weir and miller have been great. Clelland was ok. But boli and snelders did fuck all for us.

not many good strikers though. far to many duds imo

During Smith's first spell we had a near enough consistent front two of McCoist and Hateley. This was supplemented by Durie who was a very good striker for us IMO. Van Vossen & Bo Anderson were not great, but scored goals which helped us secure 9IAR. Big Dunc had issues which forced him on, and Rozenthal was pretty unaffective admittedly. Oleg Salenko flopped, but came with a reputation so I can understand his signing.

During the 1998 season, Negri scored 32 goals in 30 games, so don't say he was a bad striker. He certainly wasn't the reason we didn't win the league that season. As for his form after the Porrini-gate, you can't blame Walter for that.

During his second spell, Walter again inherited a team with an effective main striker in Kris Boyd. He brought in Darcheville and Cousin, both good strikers that IMO cannot be blamed for the failure in Manchester, nor our loss of the leauge that season.

Kenny Miller, despite some people unjustifiable dislike of him, has played an essentially role in securing the last two leagues. IMO and exellent signing from Walter.

We have also had Velicka who has done nothing and I don't believe that will change, and Naismith, who for the main has not been used as a striker, whether he was signed with this in mind I don't know, but it would be unfair to say he is a flop as a striker based on the limited game time he has had there.

All in all, I would say, both Smith's spells in charge he has inherited a team with a main striker intact. He has of course supplemented with his own signings, and in the whole has had success, the exceptions being Rozenthal, Velicka, Salenko.

Incidently, by my workings (could be wrong), Smith's signed strikers have played 386 games total and scored 165 goals total.

miller, mcculloch, broadfoot, weir

Our second top goal scorer last two seasons, our best utility player, broadfoot and our captain.

Were you trying to make some negative point about these players? - all have done excelent service for us in the Smith era.

What has to be remembered is that in his first term agents lined up outside the door offering players because of our free flowing purse strings; it was a matter of deciding which medal laden or class talent Ewan Chester decided with Walter to buy.

When Walter actually went scouting we ended up with the Stensaas or the scottish player which everyone knew about; good or mediocre.

Looking at the list from Miracle for his second term, where he still splashed a lot of money,it makes very depressing reading with only a couple of gems found, one of which was at Bomber Browns insistence,a few well known players and a whole lot of dross.

all in all, i think Sir Walter seez sumfin in players that no else seez, but fitting some of them in is well, quite hard due to injuries and what not. Look at Beasley, great player with massive potential, but again injured every other week. now going back to His first spell a cant remember much as i was a wee boy, but youz get what im saying

dont get me wrong, im one of old watties biggest fans. i just think far too many of his signings, be they his own doing or that of ewen chester the jester, have been sub-par at best. especially forwards

aye, all 4 as "football" players are fucking shite

(tu)

i do love Davie Weir though as bad as he is, Big Kirk i admire his attitude, Kenny, i admire his work rate and Big Lee i really do not like at all.
