Scots police probe anti-Catholic and Celtic-hating online rant made by English ref Jeff Winter

Jan 13 2012 Exclusive by John Ferguson

SCOTS police are investigating a sickening rant against Celtic and the Catholic church posted on former top English ref Jeff Winter's website.

The internet diary entry called the Pope a "dress wearing, Nazi, kiddy-fiddling protector" and asked if altar boys would be "abused in celebration" after Celtic beat Rangers last month.

Celtic yesterday reported the matter to Strathclyde Police, who confirmed they had begun a probe.

Winter's website was taken down shortly before 10am yesterday, hours after our story was published highlighting the online rant.

Winter, 56, is a former senior English Premier League referee, who took charge of the 2004 FA Cup Final between Manchester United and Millwall.

In his profile on Twitter, he claims to support Middlesbrough FC and Rangers.

The blog entry on Winter's website told how "bad tidings" had been received about Celtic's 1-0 Old Firm victory on December 28. It then launched into the hate-filled diatribe.

Elsewhere on the site there are other entries about Celtic, including a slur against Parkhead legend Jock Stein.

Winter is travelling in New Zealand and his mobile phone was switched off yesterday.

Winter worked as a pundit for Sky Sports and Talksport Radio after retiring as an official in 2004. He now speaks on the after-dinner circuit.

Football pundit Gabriele Marcotti said he contacted Winter to find out if the site had been hacked and received a reply saying his website manager was looking into it.

Celtic demanded an apology when Winter called Aiden McGeady a "cheating b*****d" and branded Neil Lennon "a hate figure" in 2010.

Winter could be prosecuted under the Communications Act. The Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications Bill, which was passed last month, has still to receive royal assent.

If you go through the accusations made , one has to look at the fact that the vicar of rome was indeed a member of the nazi party Y/N His ceremonial gown could be taken as a dress Y/N And also was his position prior to being hand picked by a clique to be the voice of God on earth (strange I know) was this position not one, that was head of the ongoing investigations into alleged sexual abuse of young innocent children.

So a case to be argued that although the way it has been quoted seems to be the problem the facts mentioned have some grain of truth. If it is true that he indeed had membership of the nazi party......his previous position was head of the department looking into those allegations, as to abuse of children in the church of rome and if you happen to think his attire is in your opinion rather dress like.

As for an alleged slur on Big John Stein, I cannot answer that as I have never read what was said on the blog.

But it seems strange that the football club mentioned , seems to be complaining as to the remarks made re vicar of rome, his dress sense and nazi party. Yet unless it is shoddy reporting by DR (unusual as it may seem) that they have not complained about alleged slur on Big John Stein.

Just trying to make sense of what has been brought into the public domain.

Based on the reporting in this said bastion of the people DR. My limited knowledge would suggest that how can anyone be accused of what was said. If facts can be shown as to the nazi comment and the rather colourful description to describe the vicars previous description within this church of rome.

I would not have used the terminology used re his previous role. Have just noticed that part of registered complaint relating to the OF game , why did this club not feel the need to notify the police to articles alleging the rise in domestic violence as a result in the OF fixture.

John Ferguson should have given the full blog to fully understand what had been said that lead to this unprecedented move by a football club.

So , let's for a moment run with the thought that if someone in a senior position with a certain football made remarks that were deemed malicious/racist against say players of our club after an OF game would Strathclyde Police act on a complaint or indeed if a senior officer heard such remarks being made , would Strathclyde police launch an investigation!

Indeed one would like to think that any club who had such a senior employee who perhaps made such comments, would be dealt with and the police called in by his club to take further action.

Certainly gives food for thought as to were we are heading in this country.

I abhor all forms of lying and unfounded accusations, but if someone does not have the intelligence to put forward their views in a coherent manner , well that is another question. But if it contains proven facts , how can someone be hounded.

Why did the paper not wait until the police had carried out their investigation, maybe they can take officers off tracking down the culprit who assaulted Ricksen and the club doctor at that stadium that has a history of such troubles.

Final point re above. When was CCTV introduced at football grounds in the SPL and when was this OF game played?

jeff winter is a top guy he was at a rangers clubs annual do last year in east belfast . our club went and we had a great night he was brilliant on stage telling us a few funny stories about his time as a referee. then he sat with us and just talked away like a normal rangers man would .

aside from that he is totally in his rights to speak against the catholic perverted church ..

the pope is the Anti-Christ and we all should be able to show are hatred for him . did you know from now on any priest who is charged or found guilty for raping young children will still be paid a salary by the catholic perverted church when they are released . and people still dare to be a part or stick up for this vile religion it makes me sick .
