TravelingWilBEARy 4,319
How did you feel when you heard the news? Disappointed in how the PLG reign ended? Happy that Walter was returning? Underwhelmed by a 'backward step'? Worried for the future?I think my feelings at the time can be summed up in one word - relief.

The Godfather 75,672
I was glad as it was clear we needed a quick responce and Walter was ideal... that and he was doing wonders for the national team at that point.Dissapointed for PLG but domestically we were a joke. RM Monitor And Standards Officer 112,842
I was slightly underwhelmed but he's the greatest in my lifetime, I fucking love the guy Rangers 1 st mirren 0 league cup final sums everything up about him and his teams. It's a never say die attitude and his teams play like they would die for him.To me Walter is everything a ranger should be and probably as close to a struth as many of us will ever see. North Rd 2,860
Hard to say now in hindsight as i was over the moon he came back, if we are all honest i think we thought we had a good yin in PLG, but i felt the same about the Board and got called all names for wishing some back.............. simplythebest 11,453
I felt excited, knew all about him obviously but with my age I wasn't really involved during his first spell, so I never thought i'd get to see a Rangers team managed by Walter Smith. The Godfather 75,672
Walters second stint was worth it purely for the European run.And the 3IAR

EatDolphins 5,360
I'd imagine everyone felt relieved at first them returned to moaning about the gaffer's style within 6 months.
Number6 305
I think relief pretty much sums it up as the shortlist wasn't looking too great. I just wish we'd have held out with PLG a bit longer and we may still have been seeing some rewards of that but it wasn't to be.
cushynumber 25,178
I felt we had missed an oppertunity with PLG - but I felt he let himself down by underestimating Scottish Football and not doing his homework.
Dutchy 1,200
I was glad when Walter Smith came back as PLG's style just didn't work for us and I'm not sure it would have ever done so, no matter how much time he was given.

Inigo 33,327
Yep, relief pretty much sums it up. I think such a reaction just goes to show how much faith many of us had in him that, even though he's wasn't perfect, he'd get it right when it mattered. Figo 91
I remember how upset I was when Walter left during his first spell being a wee one that grew up during 9IAR so id thought his coming back was brilliant!
RM Monitor And Standards Officer 112,842
And the 3IARHindsight now and no disrespect to ally but I genuinely believe Walter would have got us 4iar even with admin

He felt he was Billy big boots and didnt need to understand things before he came. Pity really.
Number6 305
I was glad when Walter Smith came back as PLG's style just didn't work for us and I'm not sure it would have ever done so, no matter how much time he was given.I got the feeling it was a case of too much too quickly with Le Guen. That and the fall out with the players and constant praise of the team after poor defeats. However, he seemed to be trying to change the things that in other European countries they'd changed long ago like nutrition, diet and fitness. We performed admirably in Europe that season which was a contrast to the league.
Number6 305
Was there even a shortlist? Not an official one but amongst the media and fans there were names being thrown about. There was only one choice.
cushynumber 25,178
Not ally bashing, but I wonder if Walter would ever come back for a 3rd go if Ally left for whatever reason? he has 7 years on Ferguson who only just retired. I realise a lot of things would have to happen at Ibrox for it to happen but I would have him back in a shot..
simplythebest 11,453
Hindsight now and no disrespect to ally but I genuinely believe Walter would have got us 4iar even with adminWinning the league in the admin season would have been weird tbh, no CL place and demoted 3 divisions as champions.
