Champions League or World Cup?

Money wins the bid to be hosts..

Home nation does well in tournament, winning it more often than not....... :pipe:

That's just not true, tannerall. :sherlock:

A subtle but fair point Dan-Ger :) , just seemed that way right up to the eighties with Uruguay, Italy, England, West Germany Argentina (and France later) all winning on home soil.

Rubbish

Of the 19 World Cups only 6 have been won by the host nation. And the host nation has only reached the final 8 times.

To be fair, about a third of them have been won by the host going by that. That still gives the host nation a far bigger chance than a non-host nation.

And to be fair thats a bit like comparing apples and oranges.

In the last 8 world cups only one has been won by the host and they are also the only host nation to get to a final in that period too.

By including Brazil, Uruguay and Italy (when it was a fledgling tournament with a very different format and a much smaller participation level) then the results are skewed.

If we take the modern era (say 82 onwards) then we see a very different picture emerge.

IMO both events have been ruined by corporate greed over the last 10 to 20 years.

Didn't watch the later stages of the Champion League this year, can always catch up and watch the same teams playing next year and probably the year after. They have largely made it impossible for Rangers or any other team outside of Spain, Germany, England and Italy to make an effective challenge which will devalue the competition in the long run.

I may be wrong, but I always get the feel that the World Cup is largely attended by people who would not normally attend football matches on week to week basis. They are there for a jolly rather than the football which is ok if you like your football manufactured with Mexican waves, etc rather than in the raw. IMO the last few finals have been pretty well devoid of atmosphere due to the overwhelming number of corporates rather than football fans taking up the seats.

True enough. Still more likely to win it as a host though, but I guess that's probably stating the obvious.

It's certainly not the massive advantage that some people make out though.
