Aye but Murray bought Rangers for 6m and Whyte did the same for a quid. So Gerrard should really be winning the league for a crate of empty ginger bottles and a couple of thousand pesetas.

The most expensive player in the world was ruud gullit for 6million in 1987.

Mark Hughes was the most expensive British player at 2.3million in 1986.

So by your calculations we should be able to spend £30 million on the best player in the world, or Britain’s most expensive player for £11million.
