MATCH REPORT

Rangers 2 – 1 Hibernian March 22, 2008

Nvager reporting today as Bazza is attending his brother’s wedding. Have a great day Bazza!!

THE BATTLE FOR THE TITLE

After a poor performance in the Scottish Cup, Rangers once again turned their attention to the SPL. Another must win game in a long season of must win games. Could we up our performance and put more pressure on Celtic who play tomorrow?

At the start you really had to wonder. We had an oh so slow start and never seemed to get into the game, but gradually we took control of the game. It was not pretty; we were holding Hibernian in check, but creating next to nothing. JCD and L. McCulloch were out of sync and everything was coming down the right through Broadfoot, but some of the crosses and passing were poor.

Then it happened – out of nothing Papac played a wonderful defence splitting pass that let JCD in from the left. Instead of crossing JCD unleashed a rocket into the Hibs net from a real tight angle. A great end to the first half.

In the second half we were in control, but again not creating much and Broadfoot was again busy. Walter sent on Nacho Novo for JCD. Nacho was much better today than versus Partick Thistle. Suddenly Davis swung a long looping ball into the Hib’s penalty area and the Hibs defender failed to really clear with his header and Novo was onto it in a flash to shoot a second goal. Opportunity knocked and Novo cashed in.

We were cruising and Walter took off L. McCulloch at long last. He had been very ineffective. On came Whittaker to consolidate and run out the game. Hibs however had other ideas and sent on more attacking players. We got complacent. Cuellar let a through ball go not realizing that a Hibs player was behind him, but McGregor saved the shot. Papac cleared. Near the end with the defence static Hibs chipped through a ball, their striker lobbed McGregor, it hit the bar came down, Papac missed the clearance and Hibs scored. Fortunately time was just about up and we held on for a deserved win.

Today’s team: -

McGregor: - One good save, little else to do, but looked a little out of position when he was lobbed at Hibs goal.

Rmed Verdict: - 7

Broadfoot: - Bombed forward constantly, very busy day, but has to work on his delivery. Had some clumsy tackles and poor crosses.

Rmed Verdict: - 7

Cuellar: - Great day apart from one mistake.

Rmed Verdict: - 7

Weir: - Very steady throughout, but static at Hibs goal.

Rmed Verdict: - 7

Papac: - Very steady and a great pass for JCD’s goal. May have cleared when they ball dropped off the bar at Hibs goal, but was unlucky.

Rmed Verdict: - 7

Dailly: Used his experience well. Good job in front of back four..

Rmed Verdict: - 7

Thomson: -

My Man of the Match for non-stop effort and some skillful touches. Set a great example.

Rmed Verdict: - 8

Davis: - Another great effort, but sometimes made the wrong pass.

Rmed Verdict: - 7

Ferguson: - Ineffective. Looks to be injured to me. He was never really in the game.

Rmed Verdict: - 5

McCulloch: Dreadful. He did nothing constructive all day and gave away numerous fouls. He took one direct free kick which was embarrassingly poor.

Rmed Verdict: - 5 at best.

J.C. D’archeville: - Scored a terrific goal, but was out of sync otherwise, especially early on. Still falling down too often and his reading of the game and touch was generally poor today. Somehow though he scored a cracker!

Rmed Verdict: - 7 but only for his great goal.

Novo: - Great shift, great goal.

Rmed Verdict – 7

Whittaker: - Did all right.

Rmed Verdict: - 5

Smith: - Seemed again too defensive a team selection with no wingers, but his Sub- Novo scored the winner. He is getting results so you must bow to his knowledge..

Rmed Verdict: - 7

It wasn’t a great display of football but we got the three points. That’s all we ask until we win the league.

McGregor- 7, Not a lot to do.

Broadfoot- 5, Passing deplorable again, defensively still frightening, willingness is not a substitute for ability.

Cuellar- 8, Majestic again.

Weir- 7, Solid defender.

Papac- 8, Excellent game both in defece and in the attacking mode, superb pass for first goal and coped with McCulloch's shortcomings.

Dailly- 6, Not his best game but covers the midfield area.

Thomson- 7, Came onto a game after the first 20 minutes

Davis- 7, Great scrapper with good vision and energy

Ferguson- 5, Looked unfit and off the pace, continually broke up our moves by stopping and hesitating rather than keep the moves flowing.

McCulloch- 3, Played up to Boabs description of useless Lee.He has the most annoying habit of pointing where others should go while leaving his own opponent in space.

Darchy- 7, Took his goal well but has difficulty on one on one with keepers

Novo- 7, Disappointed with his failure to be able to outjump the 6' 8'' Jones but had to play a real lone role when McCulloch opted out of the game before being replaced, took his chance well.

Whittaker- 2, Brought on to shore up the game failed miserably.

good report, 5 for mcculloch is generous though he was awful

Honestly think that was his worst game in a Rangers jersey and there's been many terrible.

his performance was on a par with C Adam against Partick - embarassing
