Overlapping full backs never have been, never will be and currently are not a feature of Smith's system, so in that sense you're spot on Muff.

People will mention Hutton, but not even Smith could ask him to curtail his attacking intent. It would have made no sense.

Shameless plug here to my article 'Let's talk tactics....' ( http://forum.rangersmedia.co.uk/index.php?...t&p=3595833 )

The fullback positions are also a cause for concern. It appears that both Papac AND Whittaker have been told to pull inside so much that it looks like we're playing with a narrow back four, with the wingers coming back to take up some sort of 'wingback' role when we're defending.

The problems here are twofold; the wingers that are asked to fall back are almost always natural strikers, and they look like fish out of water when it comes to defending.

It may increase the number of players we have behind the ball, but asking the likes of Lafferty and Novo to defend seems wasteful.

Fullbacks ARE a problem for me just now.

maybe walter will give the young guys a chance this season the likes of wilson mcmillan shinnie ness arron fleck little and loy

I highly, highly doubt it. Hope I am wrong

If we get enough injuries, Walter won't have a choice

Stevie Smith is a bombscare. An absolutely awful defender!

I'd say he's a tad better defensively than everyone's latest blue eyed boy at right back.Scary f#cking thought EH? :(

Whittaker RB, Smith LB; a thing of defensive nightmares!

They are both not good enough.

I am sure he would figure some way of avoiding playing them.

Does say on the Rangers website that Stevie Smith will start at left-back tho see where you're coming from.

WTF? <cr>

Has Smith even played a pre season game yet?

Part of Pompey at least, tho not much and not the Emirates and none of the Germany trip I think.

Official text just came in there:

GERS TEAM NEWS: Mendes, Novo, Edu & Broadfoot miss Falkirk through injury, Papac and Lafferty are banned.

Stevie Smith will play left-back.

I think Walter will play a 4-4-2 along these lines:-

:alexander:

:whittaker: :bougherra: :weir: :Smith:

:davis: :thomson: :mcculloch: :Naismith:

:miller: :boyd:

My own choice of 4-4-2 against Falkirk today would be:-

:alexander:

:whittaker: :bougherra: :weir: :kinniburgh:

:fleck: :davis: :thomson: :aaron:

:boyd: :Naismith:
