NOLUWDC 1
Rangers were last night locked in talks to try to conclude a surprise, deadline-beating loan deal for Paris St Germain winger Jerome Rothen. The left-sided French international has been tracked by Walter Smith since the two clubs met during the Emirates Tournament in pre-season and it is hoped further negotiations can land the 31-year-old before the transfer window closes at 5pm. Rangers have shipped out 10 players this summer to lighten the wage bill and any incoming moves had been considered unlikely. The chance to land a player of Rothen’s pedigree has, however, prompted the move to plug a position which has long been a problem to Smith. Capped 13 times by his country, Rothen had been lined up for a switch to Bundesliga side Schalke but the collapse of that deal has opened the door for Rangers to make their move. A deal is far from certain but the club are thought to be determined to do all they can to land what will be considered an exciting addition. After early success with Caen and Troyes, Rothen was a star performer in the AS Monaco side that reached the 2004 Champions League Final. Noted for his crossing and set-piece expertise, he rejected interest from a number of leading clubs outwith France to join PSG. His stay in the capital has not been entirely happy, though, and he is keen to kick-start his career in a new environment. The Ibrox exit door remains open and speculation continues around Kris Boyd ahead of today’s 5pm deadline. Turkish club Trabzonspor were said to be interested in Rangers’ top scorer but, with their allocation of foreign players filled up, were unable to table a bid for the Scot. Meanwhile, Ally McCoist says a number of Murray Park graduates can expect a shot at glory this season. McCoist hopes the core of the squad will be retained but the departure of a number of fringe men means aspiring Ibrox starlets will feature this season. Gregg Wylde, son of former Kilmarnock midfielder Gordon, made his debut from the bench against Hamilton last weekend. Assistant manager McCoist said: ‘You look at the current squad here and, if you are a young player, you will never have a better chance of playing. ‘If you fancy yourself and you have ability, you will have high hopes of playing for the first team at some stage this season. ‘At the end of last season, a few boys came in and played games. Andrius Velicka and Steven Smith did as much as anybody to help us win the Double. ‘So, if you’re a young player here, you must know that if you’re good enough, you’ll be given a chance.’ http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/...e.html?ITO=1490

French fancy: Rangers have made a surprise move to land Rothen on loan from PSG The chance to land a player of Rothen’s pedigree has, however, prompted the move to plug a position which has long been a problem to Smith. Glory days: Rothen and potential team-mate Pedro Mendes do battle in 2004's Champions League final Noted for his crossing and set-piece expertise, he rejected interest from a number of leading clubs outwith France to join PSG. garycassidy1802 37
I hope this goes through in time how sweet would that be... This photo would show off the undoubted class of the gers side In all seriousness though, we really should get a CB in as cover for Boogie and Weir, Broadfoots still out so our only cover are the youngers... To be fair though this switch means if CB was a problem, Papac could go centre, n Smith back in at LB
