Gazza v Brown By Terry Butcher

Just been reading this article and i really think that Butcher has lost it big time, as Brown is not even near to the class of Gazza.

WIDE eyed and hyper.

Terry Butcher looks at Scott Brown's steely stare and rampaging runs and is taken back 20 years.

To the glare and graft of GAZZA.

Broony's will to win sparked the first-half bust-up with Macedonia at Hampden when he competed for a dropped ball.

Then his flashing header set George Burley's boys on the way to a famous win.

It was an international appearance which virtually summed up the 24 year-old's entire career.

The Celtic star has always loved mixing it up and causing mayhem wherever he goes on the pitch.

Butcher loves it.

And he admits he can't help think back to Paul Gascoigne from their time together in the England side.

Butcher said: "It's true, Scott and Gazza are very similar the more you look at it.

"Both players live for football and when they go on the pitch you can see that they love the game. The game means everything to them. Scott is a phenomenal character like Gazza.

"He's not as mad as Gazza - yet - but that may come. He's an exceptional talent who you're glad to have in your team.

"If he's against you he causes you problems. He doesn't cause his own team problems which is good and Gazza was the same.

"Gazza would work his socks off the same as Scott. Scott's knuckled down and listened to people and learnt a helluva lot. You have to say that Gordon Strachan, his team-mates, and the coaching staff at Celtic have made him focus on his game.

"The only dissimilarity with Gazza is Scott's off the field antics are nowhere near what Gazza's were.

"Perhaps he's not as hyperactive as Gazza but on the field there are lots of similarities.

"If he adds goals to his game, like he did on Saturday, then you can see that with Gazza as well.

"Gazza was a bit different with his manipulation of the ball and his ability to go one on one but Scott certainly works as hard.

"A lot of people didn't see how hard Gazza worked for the team and Scott does that for Celtic and Scotland. We're just glad the injury's not as bad as we feared.

"It's just great that you've got someone in the team that's got terrific energy but can also upset the opposition with his ability.

"The best is yet to come from Scott. He's started his career very well. He's at a great club, and he's playing and scoring for his country.

"Some people say it doesn't get any better than that but hopefully there's a lot more to come."

Brown's goal got Scotland off and running against Macedonia on Saturday.

But in many ways that wasn't his most significant moment in the game.

That came with his determination and desire to go for a dropped ball with all his heart and soul. He won a controversial corner and sparked a rammy which carried on in the tunnel as the players made their way to the dressing rooms at the break.

Macedonia were rocked and lost their focus. Scotland didn't and won the game.

Butcher added: "I had a bit of a laugh about it as he reminded me of one or two other players from the past, who I won't name, who liked to get involved in stramashes.

"They'd do something that lifted our team and made the other team lose focus - whether it was through skill, a tackle or backchat.

"Scott plays to win and he wants to win desperately. He can be a volatile character, as we've seen in the past, but he has a measure about him now that's very impressive. He does his talking where it really matters.

"I would say there's a maturity about him that lets him back off a bit and let others get involved.

"He had that lovely smile on Saturday when he was surrounded by the land of the giants and just got on with it.

"What was good was that the lads came along and protected him. It continued down the tunnel and everyone was involved.

"You could see they were more wound up about it than us so it was a case of getting into the dressing room and then re-focusing on what we had to do in the second half.

"Graeme Souness used to tell us that if it was a nothing game, then do something. And he used to do something, whether it was a tackle or a shot, something that lifted the crowd and everybody.

"You could see the crowd were up for it on Saturday because little Scott was involved against these bigger players.

"It was great to see and maybe what the game needed."

Brown is now arguably Scotland's key player. The loss of James McFadden through suspension is huge. A bodyblow to our chances of making the play-offs.

There is a real sense of injustice too within the camp that his booking wasn't merited.

But Butcher insists there is no point mourning his loss. He added: "We've contacted FIFA and there's no appeal so we're going to have to draw a line under that. He's already missed about the place but there was no point in Faddy hanging around.

"It's acutely disappointing but there's no point us feeling sorry for ourselves, and we've not done that during this campaign anyway. We just try to get on with the job."

And what a job it is.

Beating Macedonia is one thing, taking on the Dutch is another.

Butcher added: "We have to be strong. The result is the most important thing and, depending on how we achieve that, it could be a long night.

"It's not about winning the game in the first 20 minutes.

"We can take confidence from the last 45 minutes on Saturday and how we passed the ball as we are going to have to pass it well against the Dutch.

"It's a game we're looking forward to. It's not to be feared.

"You know you'll get the ball so it's what you do with it. There's a light at the end of the tunnel.

"For George it's a blinding light, for others it's a pinprick but it's getting a bit brighter."

Brown is a good player but hugely over rated, with the ammount of hype thats been surrounding him lately, im worried that they will give him the captains armband with all this "he has the energy and drive to take our team forward" pish.

I can accept him bigging up Scotland and its players, because that's his job and his employers.

But to praise Celtic?

It really seems working for Scotland turns die-hard bluenoses into Celtic apologists.

The national side does seem to be increasingly made up of scum and English people who aren't good enough for Capello.

Why should I have pride in that? Who knows.

Butcher went down the road of being ashamed to play for rangers long before getting involved with Scotland. His cooper and bigotry remarks far pre date that.

Although if you read this article he is not comparing there actual ability more temperament and style. Butcher is an idiot but he is not that daft
