RANGERS striker Kris Boyd has emerged as a potential transfer target for Villa as Martin O’Neill’s January was made even busier by last night’s Carling Cup semi-final postponement.

According to sources north of the border, Villa are believed to be keeping tabs on the prolific Scottish international who came close to joining rivals Birmingham a year ago.

Boyd is once again the leading marksman in the Scottish Premier League with 19 goals already this season taking his tally for the Ibrox club to 97 goals in just over four years.

And with his contract expiring in the summer the 26-year-old frontman, who is also interesting Newcastle United, could be available for a knockdown price of around £1.5 million this month.

Boyd came close to joining his former Rangers and Scotland boss Alex McLeish at Blues when Rangers accepted a £3.8 million bid last January, but the deal collapsed because of his wage demands.

With speculation linking targetmen Emile Heskey and John Carew with moves away from Villa this month, O’Neill could be in the market for a goalscorer to boost his attacking options.

Meanwhile, Villa’s Carling Cup semi-final first leg at Blackburn has been re-arranged for next Thursday – January 14 – after last night’s original tie was called off yesterday morning.

Rovers officials took the decision, in conjunction with police and the licensing agency, at about 11am after heavy snowfall made the area around Ewood Park treacherous.

Although the pitch was playable, the blizzard-like conditions in the Lancashire town left the icy roads and pavements unsafe for supporters travelling to and from the stadium.

Carling Cup bosses faced a logistical headache when the other last-four clash between Manchester City and Manchester United, initially scheduled for tonight, was also postponed.

And with City hosting Rovers in the Premier League on Monday, organisers needed to find new dates which suited all four teams and avoided both ties being played on the same night.

Blackburn versus Villa will be held a week tomorrow with the return leg at Villa Park remaining on January 20, leaving O’Neill’s men with five games in 14 days and Rovers with five in 12 days.

The Manchester showdown at Eastlands will kick off on January 19, the original date for the second leg, which is now scheduled for January 27.

Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce said: “There was no way anyone was going to put lives at risk by letting the game go-ahead and expecting supporters to travel through the treacherous conditions.

“Having 5,000 fans travelling up the motorway and then going home in minus eight temperatures would have been absolutely ludicrous.

“The Carling Cup remains more important than the Premier League for us at this stage. The prospect of reaching a major cup final has to be our priority.

“That hasn’t changed just because the game was postponed. We still have a marvellous opportunity of getting to Wembley Stadium and we will do everything we can to achieve that.”

Villa sold out their allocation for the original tie and tickets for the first leg clash will be valid for the rescheduled fixture.

Fans requiring a refund must return their tickets to Villa’s ticket office by Monday, January 11.

Tonight’s Reserve League South clash with Portsmouth at Havant and Waterlooville has also been postponed.

Second string striker Andreas Weimann, from Austria, has signed a contract extension until June 2012.

Same as last season really. People go on and on about our debt and that players must go so the papers just link every Championship club with the best players we have. It's lazy journalism.

fucking lazy journalisim

honestly i think they just put the names of former old firm managers in a hat. Then add old firm players to another hat. random numbers to another hat

one card from each hat gives us a back page shocker

We were all quick to rubbish the Boyd-Boro story so it wouldn't surprise me if there was truth behind this.

Heskeys being linked with a move to Liverpool/Tottenham (Spurs will offload Pavylchenko) and Boyd fits that mould perfectly unfortunately. :craphead:

What mould, the Pavylchenko/Heskey roll? The only roll Boyd would fill in in England will be the rolls at half time wi the monster much crisps inside them. Pedro is going so we can keep Kris. Simples!!

Should read "because of his desire to stay at Rangers,"
