So...no deal struck then? Great... :anguish:

The LSE should be the first to know if it has been done.

I'm sure you're not allowed to announce it until they've been told.

We were never going to hear anything after 5pm aside from the bullshit that Prhopaganda FM put out.

the sun Great news but beware of April fools :shifty:

TYCOON Craig Whyte is at last set to buy Rangers tomorrow in a cut-price £28million swoop, The Scottish Sun can reveal.

Lifelong Gers fan Whyte, 39, had faced a lengthy battle to complete the takeover - despite agreeing to buy Sir David Murray's 85 per cent share of the club.

But Lloyds Banking Group last night finally paved the way for a deal by slashing the £33million asking price over fears furious fans were planning to boycott the finance giant.

It came as Whyte also agreed to wipe millions from the club's debt UP FRONT.

And last night one insider said: "Things are starting to move very quickly. He wants it done and dusted."

Sources told how the bank performed its spectacular U-turn because it was terrified of losing thousands of customers.

Shares ... Gers owner Sir David Murray

We told earlier this week how brassed-off Rangers supporters blamed Lloyds over the lack of progress on the sale.

It prompted the bank to issue a statement denying claims it wanted a £1.5million exit fee.

But after Motherwell-born Whyte finally got the go-ahead last night, one insider said: "The last few days has seen the bank painted as the bad guys.

"They do not want to be seen as the villains if this deal doesn't go through.

"They have received a furious backlash from the fans.

"It is quite clear to everyone why they have come out with this statement. It's a remarkable turnaround."

The purchase will not be affected by the ongoing HM Revenue and Customs case into Rangers' tax dealings, as we revealed last month.

The takeover could even be completed tomorrow if Murray rubber-stamps it after meeting again with Whyte.

But those close to the protracted deal say it STILL risks collapse if negotiations can't be concluded in the next few days.

The insider added: "Whyte cannot understand the bank's public statement.

"As far as he is concerned nothing has changed on his part.

"He wants it done and dusted - but there is still a few hurdles to jump. Whyte is still very bullish. He cannot see why a deal can't be done. This has been his position for months."

Rangers are today expected to announce yearly figures showing they've slashed the club debt by £7million to £20million.

Lloyds sources say it's now up to Whyte - who has agreed to pay off some of the remaining sum in advance - to conclude the business with outgoing Ibrox supremo Murray.

A Lloyds Banking Group spokesman said: "We were given notification late on Monday that Mr Whyte had officially completed the due diligence process.

"He made some requests to the bank at that point. We have agreed to deliver on what he has asked for. The deal is now a huge step closer because Craig Whyte and the bank have agreed how to address the club's debt as part of the takeover."

The spokesman added: "Mr Murray has always said he will only sell to the right person.

"It's days away from completion but we are now effectively out of the picture."

Last night fans gave a cautious welcome to the developments. Stephen Smith, chairman of the Rangers Supporters' Trust, said: "We are encouraged by today's statement by Lloyds Group and urge Sir David Murray to facilitate the transfer of his Rangers shareholding in the best interests of Rangers FC.

"Changes which will put transfer funds in the hands of the management team are desperately needed.

"Our playing squad desperately needs inward investment.

"Every Rangers fan would welcome an end to the club's current parlous financial state and an end to the inexplicable operational restrictions imposed by Lloyds and their placement on the club board."

Last night Rangers declined to comment.

CRAIG WHYTE will have to provide proof he can bankroll the Ally McCoist era before Rangers will okay his takeover of the club.

SunSport can reveal Sir David Murray agreed a deal with Whyte to sell Gers LAST MONTH.

The Scots tycoons shook hands in a make-or-break summit, but the saga is rumbling on because the Ibrox hierarchy want water-tight evidence that incoming boss McCoist WILL be given the £5million PER SEASON for transfers over the next five years Whyte promised.

SunSport understands the multi-million pound takeover will only be rubber-stamped by senior Ibrox figures once they have that assurance.

Murray - who took control of Gers in 1988 - brokered a deal to sell his remaining 85 per cent shareholding in the SPL champions to 39-year-old venture capitalist Whyte.

Whyte, though, has yet to write a cheque after months spent poring over the Ibrox books.

The deal is on the brink of completion after Lloyds Bank confirmed yesterday they were happy for it to proceed.

Whyte could land Rangers for a knockdown £28m after he and the bank drew up plans to address the club's debt, expected to stand at £20m when Gers' half-yearly figures are announced today.

Meanwhile, Gers star Lee McCulloch has begged Whyte to bankroll new deals for McCoist's big-name players.

Sasa Papac is out of contract in June while Steven Davis, Steven Whittaker and Madjid Bougherra have just a year left on their deals.

And McCulloch believes it's vital Gers are not broken up in the summer and new faces are brought in to give McCoist a fighting chance as he prepares for his first season in charge of his beloved Gers.

Midfielder McCulloch said: "It would be great if we could keep this group of boys together.

"A few of the lads like Sasa, Madjid, Steven Davis and Whitty are nearing the ends of their deals.

"They've been superb, so it would be great if the club was in a position to offer them new deals.

"If everyone is settled it would give us a real boost going into the new season.

"This is a massive summer for us all and an exciting time to be at Rangers.

"I'd love to see Ally McCoist given money to spend in the summer.

"It would give everyone at the club such a lift.

"This group of players have been terrific, but there is no doubt you need fresh legs and fresh faces around the place."

Just when everything goes quiet with Lee McCulloch he manages to get himself interviewed by the press.

It's a gift.
