Hectic January For Gers

THE SPL have today announced new dates for three of Rangers' postponed matches which means a hectic schedule of games coming up.

Rangers will now meet St Mirren at Ibrox on Tuesday, January 18 but fans are advised that this game will not take place on this date if either side is involved in a Scottish Cup replay.

The home match with Hearts - originally scheduled for December 4 - will be played on Wednesday, February 2, kick-off 7.45pm.

The Ibrox clash with Inverness Caley Thistle moves from January 29 - due to Rangers' League Cup semi-final the following day with Motherwell - to Wednesday, March 2, also at 7.45pm.

The games with Dundee United and St Johnstone - both due to be screened by ESPN - have yet to be fixed.

It means that Rangers will have a very demanding schedule of games in the early part of the New Year with six games in a 19-day period.

The list looks like this: January 15 - Hamilton (h), January 18 - St Mirren (h), January 22 - Hearts (a), January 26 - Hibs (a), January 30 - Motherwell (Hampden) and February 2 - Hearts (h).

and we can add to it. 'Demanding schedule' may be an understatement with our thin squad.

Walter has to bite the bullet and use as much of the squad as he can, the youngsters have shown they can step up to the plate when required so if we can find a balance between youth and experience then we can get through this tough period. New signings would be nice too.

I agree with you that the youngsters have shown very promising things - mainly Hutton and Wylde. However, there is no chance Walter will play them unless the squad has too many injuries or we are 3/4-0 up with 15 mins to go which is a shame. No doubt we will see a McCulloch and Edu partnership throughout these matches which simply does not work. I would also like to see Kerkar being given an opportunity but sadly I can't see that either unless injuries.

January

Sunday 2nd; bheggars at Ibrox

Monday 10th; Kilmarnock at Ibrox

Saturday 15th; Hamilton at Ibrox

Saturday 22nd; Hearts at Tynecastle

Wednesday 26th; Hibs at Easter Road

Sunday 30th; Motherwell at Hampden

February

Saturday 12th; Motherwell at Ibrox

Thursday 17th; Sporting CP at Ibrox

Sunday 20th; bheggars at the piggery

Thursday 24th; Sporting CP at the Jose Alvalade

Sunday 27th; St. Johnstone at Ibrox

And we still have Dundee United and St. Johnstone away, to fit in. Surely these two games could have been fitted in. 8 day's between the bheggars and Kilmarncok games in January.

13 days between the two Motherwell games. Please don't tell me there is an international friendly break?

Get past Sporting CP, and the fixtures really pile up. Europa League takes a backwards step for me. A couple of players should be brought in during the January transfer window, or we are going to struggle - probably wont happen though.

Visions of 2007/08 :anguish Walter Smith must rotate his squad and use everyone who's available.

Yep walter should change his tactics that have brought us do much success to start playing unproven youth, it's a fantastic plan boys ....well done

Or fail to do so, resort to a more cautious approach, and watch us drop points, just like 2007/08.

There is no reason as to why the likes of Wylde, Fleck, Hutton, Ness... cant come in and do a job. Walter Smith has to remember it's a squad game, and he is allowed to make 3 substitutes.

Get that to fcuk. There better not be any Rangers players in this pointless competition.

Great time of the year to have it, right at the buisness end <cr>

It's a pointless debate as Walter knows what he is doing and will pick our strongest team each week and win the league.

These bizarre approachs to football management are beet left to discussions on here......thankfully....

Utilising your small squad through a hectic period is bizarre <cr>

So it's ok for the likes of Hutton, Cole to play from the start in the Champions League, but not when it comes to domestic games.

Walter Smith's was partly to blame for us losing the league in 2007/08. Stubborness, failure to rotate, more cautious... some of the tactics and formation - 1 up front at home - because he wouldn't pick other players and the regulars always started, no matter how fcuked they were.

This season we have an even smaller squad. He has to get everyone involved. If people can't see that, then there is something wrong.

I would honestly forget all about the Europa League.

There is very little money involved in it, more games which means more chance of injuries and it won't make an awful lot of change to the co-efficient as the winner of the SPL still has to go through qualifying stages.

Winning the SPL is more important.
