It's happening late summer.

"Blues Brothers" Reunion - EXCLUSIVE

GLASGOW RANGERS will be in Belfast in late-summer for a glamour commemorative game at Windsor Park with Linfield.

The 'Blues' Brothers' encounter was confirmed last night by Linfield chairman Jim Kerr after he had received a letter of acceptance of the invite to Rangers from Ibrox stadium chief executive Martin Bain.

"We are delighted that Rangers very willingly accepted our invitation and we are presently looking with Rangers at a date just before the new season. Our supporters will look forward to this game and we can expect a huge travelling contingent over from Scotland," said chairman Kerr.

Linfield have traditionally had a long and close association with Rangers - the famous Gers played at the opening of the main grandstand at Windsor Park in 1930 - and the fixture, which will feature Walter Smith's first team squad, will undoubtedly have box-office appeal of a magnitude that will fill Windsor Park, particularly IF both Linfield and Rangers win their respective League championships.

Linfield are this season going flat out for their 50th League triumph - the Irish Cup has been won 40 times, a phenomenal record since the club was founded in March 1886 by a group of millworkers in the Sandy Row area.

Full-strength Rangers teams, under managers Alex McLeish and Paul le Guen, played Linfield at Windsor Park several times in the past decade.

The game is a focal point of Linfield's 125th anniversary celebrations, which, hopefully, will include other games against cross-channel opposition.

A varied programme has been drawn up by the 125th anniversary committee, which includes board members and supporters. These include two banquets - one at Belfast City Hall on May 27 (which is already a sell-out) and the other at the Ramada Hotel, South Belfast on September 10; a March 20 anniversary service in St Aidan's Parish Church, Sandy Row, near to where the club was founded; supporters' roadshows at Windsor Park, on the Shankill, in Lisburn, Newtownabbey and East Belfast; the issuing of special commemorative medals and badges; publication of a special souvenir brrochure, and an 1886 bumper draw.

"Our programme has been set up to appeal to all sections of the Linfield family across Northern Ireland and beyond and it is entirely in keeping with the proud traditions, achievements and standing of our great and illustrious club," says Billy Kennedy, Linfield vice-chairman and convenor of the 125th anniversary committee.

"Linfield have led the way in Irish League football over five generations and our management committee, members and supporters have always had an integral bond with the players who achieved so much for this club down the years and we intend to fully recognise this."
