Former Wolves and Spurs defender Dean Richards dies

_51435633_dean-richards.jpg Richards spent four years at White Hart Lane, making 73 appearancesDean Richards, the former Wolves, Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur defender, has died at the age of 36. Wolves said they were "saddened to hear of the death of Dean Richards, who passed away on Saturday morning after a long battle with serious illness."

Richards' biggest transfer was his £8.1m move from Saints to Spurs in 2001, but four years later he was forced to retire because of illness.

Since 2007, Richards had been youth-team coach at Bradford City.

During his spell at Spurs Richards was dogged by injury. He began to suffer from dizzy spells and headaches and was advised it would be harmful to his health to continue playing and hung up his boots in March 2005.

Richards had initially been diagnosed with an inner ear infection and underwent a scan for a brain tumour, but the results proved negative.

He said at the time: "I am obviously deeply disappointed to be giving up the sport I love, but it's the only choice."

During his four years at Wolves Richards was a firm favourite and the club added: "Wolves would like to take this opportunity to send their condolences to the former Molineux defender's family and friends.

"There will be a tribute paid to the defender ahead of next Sunday's game with his former club Spurs."

Richards had begun his career at Bradford, his hometown club but in 1995 he was signed by Wolves.

Four years later he moved to then-Premiership side Southampton, who were managed by current Cardiff boss Dave Jones.

Richards also impressed under Jones's successor Glenn Hoddle, who took the centre-half with him to White Hart Lane in 2001. The fee was the highest for a player with no senior international caps.

But Richards, who played for England's Under-21s on four occasions, was to only make 73 appearances in his four years with Tottenham

Sad to hear of someone dying at such a young age.

Anyone know what was actually wrong with him? I'd read elsewhere that it was cancer but the news reports only say 'a serious illness'.

His wiki page says that he got the all clear from a brain scan a few years ago after suffering dizziness and severe headaches. (Edit: Just noticed this in the above news report as well).
