Plan to play EVERY Old Firm game on a Monday night.

Recommended Posts

OLD Firm matches should be played on Monday nights, pub bosses and business leaders insisted yesterday.

Glasgow Chamber of Commerce and the Scottish Licensed Trade Association want to have Celtic-Rangers games outside weekends to limit fans' drinking time and damage to business.

Chamber chief executive Stuart Patrick said: "The city centre retail and restaurant trade loses business on weekend match days. Monday evenings would be best." And SLTA chief executive Paul Waterson added: "More matches have to be played on midweek evenings, preferably Mondays, traditionally the city centre's quietest night of the week."

First Minister Alex Salmond held a summit with police and both clubs after more than 200 arrests for violence and domestic abuse followed a controversial match on March 2.

Celtic boss Neil Lennon and Rangers assistant Ally McCoist scuffled on the touchline at the end of the game in which three Rangers players were sent off.

Last night, a spokesman for Rangers said: "The view expressed by the licensed and retail trade may reflect their members' interests but there are many other aspects to be taken into account."

A Celtic spokesman said: "In terms of scheduling, we need to understand more about many related factors.

"We certainly remain to be convinced Monday games are the best way forward."

I can see why the pub trade would be happy with this, afterall a Monday Night isn't one of their busy nights. But as for a solution to the problems away from the game and ground itself. Not a chance! doesn't matter what day or night it's on, trouble will still happen.

The SPL etc really need to wake up, they seem to think everybody still works Monday to Friday 9-5. So people will think twice about drinking in pubs etc...

Do they not realize most people that are in employment. Work rota's, and will have certain days off during the week to work around this fixture.

No idea how they come to the conclusion that having a game at 7.45 at night allowing everyone to drink all day is better than having it at 12.30 on a Sunday.

I enjoy evening games better and Monday nights are pish usually so Im all for it.

Changing the day of the week the game is played wont fix any "problems" stupid bastards

Theyre rattling on about the last game being the worst in years and that was on a weekday, 7:45ko

Pub bosses and business chiefs want a fixture on their quiet night.

Of course they flipping do! It won't stop weekend drinking and provides an extra day for them to fill their coffers.

It makes no difference when you kick off, why would Monday night be any different to midweek?

Also factor in that there's other live football on Monday nights that tv companies will not want to clash and it's a no go.

I actually think Monday could be the worst possible day as it gives a whole weekend of build up, stories in the papers Saturday and Sunday fanning the flames usual booze consumption at the weekend with old firm tension at the forefront and by the time you get to Monday night it's fever pitch, one bad tackle goes in and all hell breaks loose.
