Injured midfielder Smith could be poised for a dream move to Rangers.

Incoming Ibrox boss Ally McCoist – who replaces Walter Smith in the Gers hotseat this summer – wants to make the former Leeds man one of his first signings.

Smith, 30, became a Rangers fan in 1992 after watching McCoist, Mark Hateley and Co edge past his beloved Leeds United in the Champions League.

Smith will be allowed to leave following the emergence of Cheik Tiote.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have turned their attentions to AZ Alkmaar’s Iceland hotshot Kolbeinn Sigthorsson.

Hotline revealed last week that Toon target Luc Castaignos had decided to join Inter Milan from Feyenoord.

But Newcastle’s scouting trips to Holland have not been in vain after unearthing Sigthorsson, 21, who is also interesting RANGERS and FULHAM

FFS, the Alan Smith rumour again :(

I don't care if he supports The Rangers. Past it, legs have gone, far too injury-prone, not a central midfielder and who knows when he was last played as a striker!?

I seem to also remember him saying in a paper though that he was only at an old firm game in the Rangers end because he was up with Robbie Keane (or someone like that) and didn't want to sit in the Celtic end.
