ALLY McCOIST is closing in on his first Rangers signing, with South African international Matty Pattison set to agree a summer move to Ibrox.

Sport of the World can reveal the 24-year-old Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder has held positive talks with Gers boss-in-waiting McCoist and is currently finalising his personal terms.

Rangers expect to conclude a deal for a nominal fee in the next fortnight, with Pattison keen to return to British football after a year back in his homeland. Although born in Johannesburg, Pattison's family moved to England when he was 11 and he signed for Newcastle United as a 14-year-old.

Ironically, his first taste of senior football came in Glasgow when he made his Magpies debut, aged 17, against Celtic in a friendly in August 2004.

His early promise at Newcastle was never fulfilled after he suffered two serious knee ligament injuries which threatened his career.

Pattison left St James' Park in November 2007 to join Norwich City, when ex-Geordies boss Glenn Roeder moved to Carrow Road and made more than 50 appearances for the Canaries.

However the ambitious midfielder left East Anglia at the start of the 2009-10 season to return to South Africa in an attempt to force his way into Carlos Alberto Parreira's World Cup squad.

Despite impressing with Mamelodi Sundowns and winning two caps against the USA and Kenya, Pattison missed out on a place in his country's final 22 after being in the initial 29-man squad.

Now he wants to return to Britain and looks likely to be the first new signing at Ibrox as McCoist starts to rebuild.

Anyone is better than Edu. People are too quick to judge.

Anyway increasing the numbers of the squad can only be a good thing especially when he is signing for a nominal fee.

Since arriving in South Africa from his spell in England, Matty first found the going tough like most players that come back from Europe...he struggled with the conditions of some of the PSL pitches, the heat, the humidity, the altitude, the style of play of his current club Mamelodi Sundowns and generally just getting used to the PSL. Most players tend to struggle when they return from Europe, but gone are the days of complacancy as he has been chunning out match winning perfomances game after game for Sundowns and thus knocking on the Bafana Bafana door, especially since Teko Modise needs a replacement... a day ago.

After brilliant perfomances in the last few games that he has played for the Brazillians, he has since become a fan favourite and a headache for Pitso Mosimane who coaches the national team as the media has been putting pressure on the selectors for his inclusion. He was announced as the Player of the Month along with his coach who won Coach of the Month. Only the sky can be the limit for him right now.

Sounds quite positive.

The worrying thing is, why is Ally pressing ahead to do deals with players on the non takeover list? why not just wait and see what materialises in the next 2 or 3 weeks wacko.gif ?!

Seems silly rushing into things and then if we get taken over we could be left with... well to be honest, shite.

He had a decent chance of making it at Newcastle but injury stopped him he was a good player from what I remember and a twenty-four and a nominal fee signing we could do a lot worse than him.

Hopefully he will prove he's good enough and move on making us a profit as well the type of player we should be buying in my opinion.
