Warburton Insists Hunt For New Faces Extends To Coaches

RANGERS manager Mark Warburton insists he will never stop searching for new faces and plans to keep his leading players under constant pressure to hold onto their place.

The Englishman has signed seven recognised first-team players since taking over the reins at Ibrox and remains hot on the trail of Hibernian midfielder Scott Allan despite having had two offers turned down by the Easter Road club.

He insists his hunt for fresh blood will never stop, though, because he cannot allow standards to drop or complacency to set in within his squad.

“Rangers Football Club have to strengthen whenever possible," stated Warburton. "If we can add value at whatever stage of the season, we have to do it and the challenge to the players is to maintain their level.

“They’re not fools. They know that, playing for Rangers, you have to maintain your standards.

“Davie Weir always says to me that, in his eight years at Everton, a new centre-half came in every single pre-season and he had to rise to the challenges and see them off.

"That is a challenge to our players."

Warburton has also claimed he will not be shy to look for new additions to the backroom staff as well.

“Again, if we can add quality to the coaching staff, we will always be looking,” he told the Rangers club website.

Rangers take on Peterhead this weekend in the League Cup with Warburton clear that this is just another stage of a pre-season programme geared towards having his new-look side fully prepared for the opening match of the Ladbrokes Championship season at home to St Mirren on August 7.

“We will focus on lifting the level of performance because we have to perform week in and week out," he said.

“I think fitness levels have been good, bearing in mind we have lost a week compared to a normal pre-season.

“We have more to come this week and more work to be done and we have said all along it is about the five game pre-season programme to focus on August 7 against St Mirren.”

But assuming you were just teasing - Warburton would have to be unusually determined to beat McCoist's record of using the lack of pre-season as an excuse. I'm sure I watched a post-match interview in March or April in which he hit out with that as being part of the reason we were once again shit.
