Championship Preston are also interested but the player would prefer to stay in Scotland although Rangers could get more financial assistance if he was to head for the Championship.

Motherwell had hoped to land a similar deal with Celtic for John Kennedy but couldn’t agree financial terms and the player moved to Norwich on a short-term deal.

MOTHERWELL boss Mark McGhee is trying to land former Scotland centre-half Andy Webster on loan from Rangers until January.

McGhee has asked his Gers counterpart Walter Smith if he can take the 26-year-old, who has been dogged by injuries at Ibrox, for the next four months.

And Smith is believed to be prepared to let the ex-Hearts and Wigan man leave so he can get games and build up his match fitness - despite losing Carlos Cuellar this week.

The Steelmen are trying to come to a financial agreement with their SPL rivals for the player who is also interesting Coca Cola Championship clubs Preston and Burnley.

Webster is believed to be keen to stay in Scotland, but Rangers could earn more money if he moves south of the border.

Motherwell missed out on a loan deal for Celtic centre-half John Kennedy in the summer as they could not meet the Parkhead club's asking price. Kennedy moved to Norwich instead.

Elsewhere, McGhee has also made an offer for former St Mirren striker John Sutton, who has been released by Wycombe Wanderers and is available on a free transfer.

He is hoping the lure of Uefa Cup football will tempt the 24-year-old, who is also attracting interest from Falkirk, to move to Fir Park.

McGhee stated: "We are trying to sign up a couple of players and we hope we are getting close with both of them."

Meanwhile, Livingston utility back Dave Mackay has handed in a transfer request after learning of Motherwell's interest in him. McGhee had a £50,000 offer to buy the player, who can play fullback or centre half, turned down this week.

Why oh why did we give him a 3 year deal doh

Going by that article, it may have been a touch of genius by signing him up, then selling him for more than we spent on him. £500k or something.

But probably not.

The whole business with Webster completely defeats me, just can't understand why we signed him...

Smacks of 'jobs for the boys' to me.

Maybe he just makes a mean caserole.

You'd be sick of it after 3 years though :pipe:

Skysports.com understands Motherwell are hoping to sign Rangers defender Andy Webster.

Well boss Mark McGhee is eager to bolster his defence and he has turned his attentions to Webster after missing out on Celtic's John Kennedy.

Webster has seen his time at Ibrox blighted by injury and he made just one appearance for the side last season.

Gers boss Walter Smith is believed to be willing to loan him out so that he can get some regular action under his belt.

Webster's agent, Charles Duddy, has confirmed talks are ongoing between both clubs about a possible loan deal.

"I believe Motherwell are speaking to Rangers about signing Andy," Duddy told skysports.com.

"They have expressed an interest in signing him on loan until January.

"Talks are ongoing and we will see how things develop."
