Jayne the captain does have a season ticket for ibrox but cant get to as many games because of football and work. polar bear 0 Posted August 27, 2008 Share Posted August 27, 2008 The Blue Belles Are Blue RANGERS' Ladies have shown Walter Smith's first-team the way by beating Old Firm rivals Celtic 2-0 in their opening league game of the season at Lennoxtown. Drew Todd's team have only been together for a month but they proved too much for their Glasgow rivals with two late goals from Natasha Anderson and Claire Ray getting them off to a flyer. Rangers' Ladies was formed following a close partnership with Paisley City Ladies only last month but Todd has worked closely with Football In The Community coaches to bring some of country's best female players, including Scotland under-19 captain Jayne Somerville, to the club. Despite starting in the First Division the coach has high hopes that his team will make the step up to the Premier Division within a year and after watching the defeat of Celtic it's easy to see why he has such optimism. Rangers were head and shoulders above their opponents in the opening half hour but failed to take the opportunities that came their way due to a combination of poor finishing and excellent goalkeeping. The match remained goalless until the last 20 minutes of the second period and it was Anderson that broke the deadlock with a fantastic individual effort. The talented youngster cut inside from the left before curling a 35-yard shot into the top right hand corner of the net. A second soon followed and it was equally as good. Lisa Swanson did well in the wide area and she played in Claire Ray who skipped past three defenders before slotting the ball low into the net. This put a bit of icing on the cake for the girls who thoroughly deserved their victory on the day. Todd was understandably delighted with the performance and is upbeat about his side's chances of gaining promotion this season. He said: "We went up to Lennoxtown with high hopes of getting a win and in the first half-hour we dominated possession and should have been ahead. "Some good saves and poor finishing meant that the game remained level and Celtic came back into it as you would expect from a team of their quality. "We had to defend well during that period but after the break the game was even until the last 20 minutes when we really started to take control. "It was a hard game but we were delighted that our young girls responded and we managed to get the goals our build up play merited. "Natasha scored the first and she is a young prospect who is involved with the national team at under-17 level although I don't think it will be long before she moves up to the under-19 squad. "She is an outstanding young talent and the skies the limit for her. "But we have to remember that this was our first league game and we have had to start in the First Division. "Celtic are well into their programme and we are four weeks into ours so all things considered it has been a decent start and there are a lot of positives to take from the game. "We have a strong squad with players such as Jenna Ross, who was excellent against Celtic, and Jayne Somerville in there. "Jayne has played at the highest level in the Champions League so she will have a big influence on the team but it will take a bit of time for everything to gel and we are improving game by game. "We played Hamilton's Premier League team before our match against Celtic and they are one of the top four of five teams in the country. "We beat them 3-0 and I still think there is a lot more to come from us. "The Celtic result gives everyone confidence as it does at every level but we must keep working hard if we are to enjoy a successful season." She got carded twice for sything down the same Celtic player! 1st one was more akin to an assault....no attempt to play the ball...just a good old flying knee intae the stomach!!!
