Why does Northern Ireland play in green?

Recommended Posts

I just wondered why Northern Ireland National Team play in Green ?? I mean their national anthem is God save the queen,, there fans wave Union jacks and the Red Hand (obviously) their support is about 99% Protestant,, all the catholics in the North support the republic!!! there is NO green in their National flag,,and they claim to be more British than Irish,,,so without being bigoted I just wondered if there was a reason why they wear Green,, anyone know why ??????????? is it just a PC thing ????

nothing wrong with them wearing Green ,,Im honestly not meaning it that way,, just dont see the connection thats all,, i mean there is no Green in their flag ,,and considering the songs there fans chant and their History ,,it just seems a little hypocrytical as Green is usually associated with the nationlists,, I cant imagine our fans excepting a Green away strip ,,just to draw a comparrison ,, I know lots of boys from North Ireland in the Military,,and when I call them Irish (in jest) they usually kick off,,, so how did it all come about ,,, was curious thats all ??

I used to wonder that as well. It's probably because when they were one team with the republic, they played in green, so probably just kept the strip green.

NI have a blue 3rd choice top, or training top I'm sure. I still wear the home top from a couple of years ago.

Why do Scotland play in dark blue

Good question Root. I found this, although I knew of it.

Thank God we ended up favouring Dark Blue over "Primrose and pink".

good question.

st patrick and the shamrock i imagine come into it.

although these have been taken on more by the irish community, as it was a whole Ireland under Britain at the time, st pat was buried in ulster and his cross is part of the union jack

(our) brit army play in green too ;)

Whats wrong with them playing in green?

It's the colour of cow sick. :craphead:

Germany play in white as it's the colour of the Prussian flag.

Italy play in blue because it's the colour of 'Azzurro Savoia' (savoy blue) which was the colours of the family that united Italy.

Holland play in orange because it's the historical national colour of the Dutch founding father, William of Orange-Nassau, coat of arms.

Australia play in either yellow or green because it's the colour of Australias national flower, the wattle.

its scotland fault we play in green :P We apparently played in blue up untill the 1930s but changed to green because the blue shirts clashed with scotlands home shirt. As for the green well its due to the fact we live on the emerald isle even if we are a seperate country from the republic.
