Barry Ferguson - all talk in here

Recommended Posts

I wish but it would never happen, I would take any money we could get for him though and stick davis in the middle or even Edu

Talk of putting edu in the middle are crazy, its absurd to suggest taking our most experienced player and replacing him with the least experienced a player who has said that he is struggling to adapt to the physical nature of scottish football.

Thing is, he never said that, it was the media, and I would have had davis in there first, and given edu a chance to naturally progress in, Mendes is just as experienced in the middle of the park and has the champions league medal to boot

Rangers skipper Barry Ferguson linked with move to Premiership outfit Middlesbrough

Jan 11 2009 Exclusive by Mark Guidi

MIDDLESBROUGH are weighing up a £2million move for Rangers skipper Barry Ferguson.

The Premiership side put the 30-year-old at the top of their shopping list after midfielder Gary O'Neil last night moved nearer the exit door at the Riverside.

And the swoop comes as Ferguson demanded showdown talks with chairman Sir David Murray over his Ibrox future.

The Scotland captain (left) is seeking a meeting with Murray to thrash out what the club want to do with him.

Ferguson, who rejoined Gers in 2005 after a two-year spell with Blackburn, has been unsettled with talk in the past week of him being sold to help ease the club's financial problems.

MailSport can reveal Middlesbrough are now the club keenest on the midfielder as they bid to pip bitter rivals Newcastle to his signature.

They could move for Fergie this week if they sell O'Neil to Portsmouth. Boro may well rake in around £5m and will consider using £2m of that in a bid to land the Ibrox ace.

Ferguson - 31 next month - does not want to leave Gers but fears he may have to.

His contract expires in the summer of 2010 and he'd love to sign an extension that would guarantee him a testimonial.

But he does not know if Gers want to give him a new deal and if they do he realises it is likely to be on a much lower rate than the weekly wage he enjoys at the moment.

The club may want him to accept as much as a 50 per cent pay cut with greater emphasis on more lucrative appearance money. One way or another, Ferguson would like to meet Gers owner Murray to find out exactly what's going on. They have had an excellent working relationship for more than a decade and Ferguson hopes to be given assurances he has a future at Ibrox.

The player's agent John Viola flew into Glasgow on Thursday and his client's future tops his agenda.

Gers boss Walter Smith has told Ferguson he wants him to stay but the decision may be out of his hands.

Should Ferguson have to go, a move to the north east of England would suit him best for family reasons.

Ferguson swoop is still talk of the Toon

NEWCASTLE boss Joe Kinnear is considering tabling a bid for Rangers captain Barry Ferguson this week.

And it could come down to what sort of report card the Scotland skipper receives from two former Old Firm rivals.

SportTimes understands Kinnear is still swaying over whether or not to table a bid for Fergie, who is also on the radar of Middlesbrough.

It's believed he has already asked Newcastle youth coach Alan Thompson - who came up against Ferguson a number of times for Celtic - for his opinion on the 30-year-old.

And he is expected to follow that up with a call to his close friend John Hartson to see if he feels Ferguson is good enough to cut it in what would be his second spell in the Premiership.

Ferguson - who is rated at around £2.5m by Rangers - is thought to be one of a number of players the club are willing to sell as they attempt to ease financial problems. A Newcastle source confirmed: "Joe hasn't fully made up his mind on whether or not to bid for Barry. He rates him as a player but hasn't seen as much of him as he would have liked recently.

"He has been canvassing opinion on him from people that he respects. Alan Thompson is a member of the coaching department and he has played against Barry on a number of occasions.

"But Joe is particularly friendly with big John Hartson from their time together at Wimbledon. He is hoping to speak to him. He values his opinion and whatever he thinks about Barry could have a bearing."

Meanwhile, Willie McKay today refused to back down in a war of words with Sir David Murray after defending his right to offer Rangers players to Newcastle.

The agent has been caught up in a row after touting Ferguson, Pedro Mendes, Allan McGregor, Charlie Adam, Chris Burke and Brahim Hemdani to the Magpies.

Rangers only learned of the move when Newcastle director of football Dennis Wise called Walter Smith to ask about a loan deal for Mendes. McKay insists he took his lead from a conversation with Rangers chief executive Martin Bain, who is alleged to have then given a list of players available for transfer - but no authorisation to sell them.

Murray said: "There was a conversation and he (McKay) asked Martin who was available, but that did not give him a mandate to approach other clubs. Mendes' agent phoned me and was furious his player was being offered to another club."

But McKay declared: "If I have a conversation with Martin and he tells me so and so is available for X-million pounds, so and so for X-million pounds and someone else for £500,000, then I take that as a mandate to find them clubs."

Meanwhile, Lee McCulloch has been linked with Fulham and Ipswich. Blackpool have confirmed interest in taking Alan Gow back on loan after his failed medical at Wolves.

Rangers should never allow themselves to get to the point where they have a team full of '30 somethings' as they did in Walters final year last time round. Most clubs nowadays allow their better players to leave for a fee with them having a couple of years at the top left in them and we should be no different. Davis is the perfect replacement for Barry and i'd rather take £2m for someone with another couple of years at the top (given his recent injuries) than someone like Boyd who has several years in him. However i'd take £5.5 - £6m for both any day.

Get rid of Barry and have Mendes and Davis in the middle....and instead of playing strikers out wide(your having a LAFFerty and Novo) then maybe.....and i know this sounds very bizarre....play fuckin wingers there.

Aaron right and Beasley left and switch them throughout the game.

  • 2 weeks later...
NEWCASTLE are ready to launch a £2million deadline day swoop for Rangers captain Barry Ferguson.

The midfielder has been on Joe Kinnear's radar all month and now the Toon boss is set to follow up his interest with a formal bid.

Kinnear doesn't doubt Ferguson's ability although he has reservations about the player's fitness due to a recent ankle injury.

However, MailSport understands he has asked senior Newcastle stars their thoughts on Ferguson - and they urged him to make a move for the Scotland skipper.

Ferguson - who turns 31 tomorrow - doesn't want to leave Ibrox but would not turn down a switch to Newcastle if a bid is accepted.

Gers are desperate for money and need to bring in around £3million this month to ease the pressure being put on them by their bank.

They will reluctantly accept a minimum £2m for Ferguson.

Ibrox chiefs will now wait to see if Kinnear contacts them before the closure of the transfer window at 5pm tomorrow with a bid.

Ferguson leaving would do our Old Firm chances the world of good. Davis would be moved into the centre and Smith would be forced to play two actual wingers. Naylor and Hinkel just cannot cope at all with an out and out winger driving at them.
