Timing is everything

There is a saying within comedy circles that “timing is everything”.

However for us forlorn Bears there seems to nothing comical about events at our club. The feeling is now that, despite Walter’s rhetoric about only fringe players being for sale, any player will be moved in true Leslie Crowther fashion...”If the price is right” .

The announcement that both Boyd and Ferguson were available has cemented many Bears current state of gloom and has caused near consternation amongst many Bears, in particular the significant weakening of the team and the squad should these two depart for pastures new.

The fact we are hot on the tails of our rivals in the title race, suggest the moving of Boyd and Ferguson is not good timing.

Yet funnily enough perhaps there was a time when the sale of these two players would have been good timing. If we rewind back to the PLG era when it was Barry vs PLG...a 12 round contest fought through the press, then this was the time to offload these two players. Boyd had already demonstrated his allegiance for Ferguson with his 6 fingered goal celebration. Eventually PLG told Ferguson he was transfer listed, and the phoney war became a stark reality.

Murray had to abandon his holiday to come back to mediate. It seems that the golden rule of “No man is bigger than the club” was forgotten, as PLG departed back to France whilst Ferguson remained at the club. If rumours are to be believed, some Rangers players were not happy with the strict training methods and diets of the Frenchman, his belief that footballers should treat themselves as professional athletes and act accordingly. It seems that Monster Munches are not in the athlete's Good Food handbook.

But what if Murray had decided in PLG’s favour ? What kind of message would that have sent out to both players and fans ? Before anyone thinks Im defending PLG – Im not – I felt both he and Ferguson should have been shown the door for misleading the fans.

Well it would certainly ensured we had no prima donnas or cliques at our club. It would also have given credence to the statement that no man is bigger than the club. (Unless you are Barry Ferguson of course) Selling these 2 then would have been a real statement of intent and purpose for our club. Its my belief it was an opportunity missed.

But lets fast forward again to the start of this season. Perhaps someone should have told Walter that the “buy 2 get one free” offer did not apply to centre forwards as he attempted to get a market share of strikers. We all knew that midfield was the priority...well all except Walter. With an important European qualifier coming up, and a financial nest egg at stake we came face to face with Kuanas ill equipped, and paid the price for it.Utter humiliation.

But following that exit we then plunged into the transfer market for midfielders ! Talk about locking the stable door after the horse has bolted ! The right action but at the wrong time.

Is it not about time we got our timing right ? But there is a source of amusement without good timing, unfortunately its our club which is providing it.

Mr chairman...We are not amused.

I blame much of our current plight on him M...and it makes me sad to say that.

Goodness only knows what he was thinking about in the summer.

I just stated in another thread that Walter was an unmitigated disaster this past off season. You are right shocking mismanagement and should have been fired after Kaunas.

Without a doubt Nva.

I believe its only the high regard the press have for him which is saving him from a savaging.

I agree we should have binned Baz back then but the overwhelming body of fans seemed to be attacking Le Guen so Murray took the path of least resistance.

I think we've missed Le Guen more than we would have missed Baz. The argument he didn't understand our game would not have lasted, the mans not stupid and would have gotten his head around it soon enough. Even sooner if he'd been backed with a fraction of the money Smith received.

Remember all the players Le Guen was originally linked to? All quality, strange he courted them if he knew he only has a couple of million quid to burn.

If PLG had Smiths £30 million I believe we wouldn't be watching cletc heading for their 4th title or having to put up with poor football.

These players supposedly courted were paper/ supporters talk putting 2+2 together to make 53. He was not involved in the picking or signings of transfers at Lyon and with us his selections of players to be signed was ludicrous for our game. Not only that he would not use the funds still available because he thought his signings would romp the spl.

All in the past, but PLG should have been able to overcome a first division side. We will never know how we would have progressed under PLG, but the six months he was here were unbearable outwith Europe, and did not offer any hope for the future. Where are all his signings now?

I find this constant gazing back lovingly at a man who twice asked to leave our club by December a tad ridiculous.

PLG cared so little about the job he spent his last few months of his time on the dole with his feet up reading le paper when he should have been preparing for the task in hand by getting to know everything he could about our squad, our club and Scottish football

Unrequited love can be a bitch

*shudder*

When quoting figures of what walter has spent it always wise to qualify it with what has been taken away from him…….

His net spend is barely £12m.

Even then, Wenger could build three league (SPL) winning squads with that!

Agreed. Ferguson in particular should never have been allowed to wear the shirt again as a matter of principle. Instead he was lauded by many as some kind of hero for his selfish actions. Still can't believe Murray allowed this to happen.
