DJ getting excited!

Evening Times Column

A MANAGER whose does not command respect from the dressing room is a dead man walking.

He can be popular, clever and even tactically aware, but if his players don’t have that great esteem the top man needs, mixed with a bit of fear of their gaffer, then it’s not going to work.

Rangers knows this better than most.

Steven Gerrard wouldn’t have had to mutter a single word to his squad on that first day of training to get over the message that he was The Boss.

I think this is why more punters have backed Rangers to win the league than even celtic.

I must say, I raised a wry smile when I heard that. Anyone who has read this column will know that time and again I have warned against the Rangers supporters getting carried away, simply because the gap to celtic is, and has been, so huge.

However, I’ve got to admit that even me, someone who has preached keeping feet on the ground, getting as excited as the supporters about what MIGHT happen and while I’m happy with the players brought in, my positivity is growing because of Gerrard.

I believe this to be the best Rangers squad in a decade – you read that right - and at long last there are some leaders on the pitch, so badly missing, and players who can put in a proper tackle.

Gerrard is missing just one player, I believe, a big centre-forward and once he signs one I think he will be happy with that. I expect something to happen with regards to this pretty soon.

Rangers have a chance next season. I now honestly believe that. Recruitment has been good and I’m told the players have bought into what their new manager is preaching.

As if they have a choice.

Gerrard has clearly not been fazed by the size of Rangers, and the demands and expectations placed on any manager of that football club. This is a Liverpool legend we are talking about here and so this is his kind of environment.

And if someone has some doubts about whether they want to be a part of it, then they know where the door is.

This is why I believe Josh Windass will leave if Cardiff City or another club bid £3m for a midfielder.

Even if he is 50/50 about making a move, he goes. Rangers is not for him and he would leave with my best wishes.

Gerrard was a 100 per cent player and that’s what he wants from his players. Total commitment to Rangers.

Bruno Alves is a player who has been accused of lacking commitment; however, I am not convinced that we have seen the last of the Portuguese.

I fancy Gerrard will play with a three-man defence and that is why I feel the veteran defender might be kept on.

I will end on a sad note.

Harold Davis, a Rangers legend, passed away this week and I would like to pass on my condolences to his family and friends.

i want to get excited but i just can't. after the last 6 years there has been so little to be excited for.

i hope gerrard comes in and puts that mhob in the east back in their place. i really do...but i'll believe it when i see it.

The green goblins are shite. It won't take much to shift them.

true they are honkin but that's no my point. we have all sorts of managers come in promising all sorts of revolutions but we always end up with a new manager and a whole new set of players. warburton, pedro, murty and now gerrard. i wish gerrard good luck and he has my backing but i'll start getting excited when we actually pump that lot. no draws. a straight win.

They aren’t world beaters but they are definitely far from shite. They turned up and looked the part when needed to.

Most of their previous teams would smash the 2018 one.

The league has been in a bizarre situation the past 6 years and they only look decent cause we've taken ages to get our act together.

Ah, big DJ. Got to sell those newspapers you know. He's never really defended us 100% (sometimes he's done ok but not nearly as much as he should have) but the quoted article seems ok. Nothing drastic or astounding, just a piece on Rangers.

The one thing he has hit on though is that to get players working hard they need a bit of fear of their gaffer. It's been a while since we had that. The thing that recently gives me confidence in Gerrard is not the signings or getting rid of the dead wood, but the short vid where he was yelling (something like) "stop fucking around and give me 100% commitment" and the players genuinely realising that they better get the finger out. He doesn't seem to be an ex player dipping his toe in management, but looks more like a man wanting to succeed and is determined to apply the mentality and work rate he learned playing for a top side. I hope I'm reading it right.

Decent article from big DJ.:tu:

Personally , I'm as excited as a 10 year old at Christmas as we await the new season. Got my first ST in years and look forward to us putting in a real challenge for the title this time around. Let's go!

It pains me to say but I agree with this. I really don’t think they’re a great team but nobody seems to be able to lay a glove on them and at the end of last season when they had to turn it on they did.

I felt a lot of the unbeaten run in Rodgers’ first season was a result of the media playing them up and building frenzy. But even last season they still seemed to have the ability to turn a defeat into a draw and a draw into a win.

I’m no one of these master tactician folk but to me it all seems to stem from that wee midfield triangle they employ. Defensively they’re suspect and on the frontline, aye, Dembele is a good player, but he’s no Ronaldo. A bit of pressure from us, via a couple of wins, and I think their wheels will fall off.

I agree but I find it irrelevant tbh. It’s about the here and now
