Its fairly common. Managers will come in with one or two (assistant and a coach or two) but much of the coaching staff remains the same. Part of the whole DoF/Sporting director stuff is then building the backroom staff to fit the clubs particular vision and topping it off with the manager and his additional staff. There's a lot of continuity in a clubs coaching staff from manager to manager - which is why Gerrard taking every cunt with him makes Wilson getting it right all the more important.
