Walter admits 3 games in 7 days might be too much for Davie Weir

WALTER SMITH won't ask veteran skipper Davie Weir to play three games in a week for Rangers this season - leaving the Ibrox men short of cover in defence.

The Gers' gaffer will be fighting on four fronts as his side try to go one better on the domestic front after clinching the Double while trying to make an impact in the Champions League.

But with no new signings and eight first-team departures, Smith's squad has been heavily trimmed this summer.

And the Rangers gaffer knows his side would struggle to cope if Madjid Bougherra or 39-year-old Weir got injured.

Utility man Lee McCulloch, left-back Sasa Papac and untried kid Danny Wilson could step in but Smith admits it's a concern going into the new campaign.

He said: "The central defensive department is where we are lacking in depth because Kirk Broadfoot won't be fit until October.

"McCulloch can play there, as can Papac but it's a bit early for Wilson.

"He's only 17 and you don't see many centre-halves at that age going about. I'd hope he'd get a game or two this season but it will be a gradual introduction.

"Davie never missed a game or a training session last year. I'd never say it was beyond him to do it again because he's one of those boys.

"But obviously this season where we're looking at playing in the Champions League, we'd need to take into account that he's beginning to hit the end of his career.

"We'll see how it goes - three games in seven days will come up and that might be too much for him."

The so called purists on this borad are going to try and rip that point to shreads.

I agree with Walter here, 17 is very very young for a centre half.

Wouldn't mind seeing him get a few run outs in the league cup.

we need to bring someone in. Even if we only make one signing this summer it has to be a centre back. What ever happened to martin stranzl? He was linked to us in jan and apparently would only have cost £1m. 29yr old with over 50 international caps and looked good at euro 2008. Doubt his wages would be that high either. Cheaper option than Tonel anyway.

Broadfoot, Papac and McCulloch should be adequate cover at CH for most SPL games, especially at home.

Broadfoot is awful, especially at CB, Papac is never a CB in a million years, and McCulloch is not very good in that position either.

Certainly not adequate cover IMO. The lack of ambition at this club is appauling.

A CB at the very least is a must before the window closes.

Broadfoot proved himself more than adequate at right back in the SPL, he also held his own in europe

We are on about playing in the CB position. A position that he's a liability in. He's also a poor right back!

The sooner crap like that are moved on, the better. He'd struggle to get in the majority of SPL sides.
