Dundee 1:3 Rangers

With everything going on just now at Ibrox, a football game comes as a huge relief to everyone concerned with the club. In saying that, tonight’s game is affected directly from the behind the scene antics. In this case it is through the playing personnel as a wave of midfield injuries and the lack of a squad means that Rangers had to blood some youngsters tonight and it was Fleck, McMillan and Wilson who were called into the top team, Novo, Alexander, Beasley and Thomson also came back into the squad.

It was hard to imagine the way the team would play but Rangers came into the game with a definite purpose with the young guys trying to force the early pace and it was a set piece that broke the deadlock with Whittaker glancing the ball into the net from a John Fleck corner. The lead wasn’t to last too long however as Thomson gave a way a free kick and Griffiths conjured a stunner of a strike to level the match. The end of the half needed to come as Dundee laid a late onslaught on the Gers goal.

The second half started as the first had finished as Dundee kept up the pressure on the Rangers goal with the Gers restricted to long range efforts. That was, however, until Whittaker stole down the right and fired in a cross that was deflected into his own net by MacKenzie. This knocked the stuffing out of the fiery Dundee and Rangers managed to control more of the game.

The control allowed a more counter attacking line up and when Thomson found Novo behind the defence, he found Fleck for the easiest of tap-ins to round the game off and a good night for Rangers and their young guns.

RM’s verdict:

Alexander – 6 Had a busier night than he may have expected, really had little chance with the thunderbolt of a free kick.

Whittaker – 7 Showed as the main source of composure on the young squad. Popped up for the goal and fired in the cross that lead to the second.

Papac - 7 Had to act as the stalwart at the heart of the Rangers defence and, as captain, put in a solid performance with a fair bit of pressure on the team.

Wilson – 7 Looked composed enough in the back line and may well find that this performance leads to a few more in the Blue of Rangers. Its nice to see a Centre Back that can play a wee bit too.

Smith – 7 A good left back showing with plenty of forward drive. Gave us an outlet when under pressure.

Beasley – 4 Anonymous showing from the American who really should have been in the limelight in this game if he really wanted to make an impression on the management team.

McMillan – 6 Nice drive in the middle of the park going forward and tried a range of passing. Drifted in and out of the game as Dundee controlled large amounts of possession.

Thomson – 6 Decent shift by Thommo but like McMillan was overrun for big parts of the game.

Fleck – 7 Good first half that saw him really drive at the Dundee and wasn’t shy at having a dig at goal either. Faded a little in the second half until a late break that saw him round of a good night.

Novo – 6 Lots of grit and determination but just not the final product today. Managed to get in behind to find Fleck for the third indecisive goal.

Lafferty – 5 Didn’t get into the game way near enough to really trouble the Dundee back line.

Subs –

Naismith – Put on to steady things up and see the win home.

Fleck, McMillan and Wilson who were called into the top team,

Doubt that Fleck was really called up since he is already in the first team?

It was meant as in the starting eleven...

:)

I kept up with the game on the minute by minute feed and it seemed that Dundee were in control for most of the match but I was pleased to see that Fleck had quite a number of shots on goal. Good to see the boys get a run out, even if it wasn't by choice.

Good report, thanx. :)

I really don't understand Beasley. He should have been out there tonight running riot, but from what I read in the thread, then in the report, he must have been attrocious.

It sounds like he can't be bothered any more ... shame actually.

Good to see Wilson, McMillan, and Fleck all played well. Hopefully the emergence of Wilson and Papac proving to be competent CB options means we won't have to see McCulloch in there when injuries/suspensions hit
