WadeWilson 4,670
Goal Record ChallengeThe Zambian Football Association challenged a long-standing FIFA record for the most goals scored in one calender year after Lionel Messi, was recorded to have beat it by scoring 86 goals in December 2012. Messi was reported to have replace a record held by Gerd Muller. However, Zambia claimed that Chitalu broke that record in 1972 by scoring 107 in one calender year but that these were not officially recognized by FIFA. They have commissioned an independent team to investigate the matter further and file an official dispute to FIFA.So; they are gonna file an 'official' dispute over goals in matches that FIFA did not deem 'official.' Mmmmkay.
JamieD 20,034
Apparently Flamengo claim that Zico also scored more in '78, though we all know Brazilians take into account goals scored in the street as a child, goals in training, goals scored on PES etc.

Ribz2009 12
messi scored 19 goals agaist the top 6 last season and only 12 against the bottom 6 so his record isnt down to playing dross, its an amazing record that may never be broken. I bet he also has a very good assist tally for the year.
Gaz52 11,837
I thought he was supposed to have got a really bad injury against Benfica? I was reading stuff like "he might never be the same player again with that injury" and all sorts of shite like that or was that just people being dramatic?Barcelona mind games probably, apparently the full of Madrid could see Mourinho's hardon

King in the North 2
I'm just glad that finally Godfrey Chitalu gets the credit he deserves. As a keen follower of Zambian football I always watch old recordings in awe as he decimates teams of boys 15 years younger than him.

S1lv3r 274
"Barcelona's Lionel Messi has set the record for most goals in a calendar year by scoring his 86th goal of 2012.The 25-year-old Argentine overhauled Gerd Mueller's tally of 85 - set in 1972 - to set a new benchmark which includes goals for club and country" _____________BIG difference between both record scoring feats..... Gerd did his when "proper tackling" was allowed ... wee Messi is scoring for fun due to crap defenders not being able to carry out their defensive duties properly. If the defending was better, why (in the league) was there 3.4 goals per game compared to 2.7 in the current la liga? Similarly the cup competitions and European Cup averaged considerably more. AND at the same time the modern game does NOT allow proper tackling (not the half you in two type.... normal tackling)Back in the 70's when Gerd was plying his trade.... most guys playing the game at a decent level.... were GOOD ! Most teams were real good. Now a days its the top few in every top division that are real good..... hence a hell of a lot more not so good players inclusive of defenders..... I'd go as far as to say there are waaaaaaay less decent defenders now than EVER playing football.

Would you care to tell me some premiership teams that have good defences? I readily await your response.PS - I would hazard a guess that your Messi's, Iniesta's, Xavi's, Ronaldo's, Mata's, Pirlo's etc would run rings out of your 'old good days' pals
