McCoist seeks transfer clarity

Ally McCoist will seek clarity from the Rangers board over his budget for next season as he bids to secure top targets at the earliest opportunity.

The Light Blues boss said on Saturday he feared the cash available to bolster his squad may be reduced following Charles Green's resignation as chief executive.

A signing embargo means the club must wait until September 1 to register free agents and January 2014 to sign new players.

McCoist has a number of players on his wanted list and now wants to move quickly to secure targets on pre-contracts for fear of missing out as he plans for the Irn-Bru Second Division.

Asked if will speak to someone at board level as a matter of urgency to clarify the situation with regards to strengthening, he said: "Absolutely. We are really far down the line with a lot of targets and a lot of players.

"It's not an ideal situation because we can only sign players who are out of contract and we can only register them from September 1.

"So I think it's in our best interests to move as quickly as we possibly can and get them signed up.

"If these players get other options, which might be the case, they would be well within their rights to weigh them up and they might not choose us.

"It's more important than ever now that we get an opportunity to move forward and get players ASAP."

Green offered his resignation following "negative publicity" in recent weeks, after former owner Craig Whyte alleged he was involved in the Green consortium's acquisition of Rangers last summer.

Those claims will be probed by an independent investigation commissioned by the Rangers board.

Green also recently apologised after being charged by the Scottish Football Association for allegedly using "racist and offensive language".

Despite being hit with more off-field turmoil, McCoist refused to be too downbeat.

He said: "It's not hard not to be despondent.

"Sometimes you think 'where's the next one coming from?' But we have to move on.

"We need an opportunity to regroup. You know me, I'm certainly (a glass) half full (person), rather than half empty.

"The job has been done this season.

"We can argue about how it was done but the bottom line is the boys have managed to do the job.

"Now, all we would like, as the coaches and managers, is an opportunity to do our job and take the team forward.

Hopefully we can do that next year."

There was on-field disappointment for the Third Division champions, to add to the off-field drama, as Rangers slumped to a 2-1 home defeat to Peterhead on Saturday.

Lee McCulloch opened the scoring for the Light Blues but goals from Scott Ross and Rory McAllister sealed the win for the visitors.

"I've got plenty of complaints," said McCoist.

"We should have been home and dry in the first half with the chances we missed.

"Losing the goal, I feel like an old record player here, but we basically just dropped our man at the back post and they got a free header.

"In the second half, we huffed and puffed.

"I think, actually, it's really evident where we are at the moment and what needs to be done.

"Nothing has changed over the last couple of weeks. We need freshness.

"There were positives. Luca Gasparotto looks as though he is doing all right when he comes on at centre-back and young Daniel Stoney came on and did fine.

"The boys, although they've got the job done in terms of winning the league and moving to the next step, they've got a lot to play for when they're out there.

"There were certainly one or two disappointments in terms of individual performances but some of the young lads did fine."

So have we and they all stop at his door. Can we not learn from the financial mess we were in that we should NOT be buying our success and coaching and management staff should have a clue how to build a successful team / club without thinking we can just buy our success. I'm not saying we shouldn't buy at all but ffs, stop replacing shitey players every summer with a batch of new ones

We can't afford to allow this guy to spend more money. In the two seasons before we move back to the top league, we need a new coaching culture at the club to have bedded down. That needs to start now. A new Chief Executive should gut the back room and management set-up, and get started on a whole raft of key appointments, beginning with the manager's post, and working down the system. Money will be needed for that. Once the leadership and coaching is sorted, we can think about investment in the right type of players.

That's what should happen.

What will happen is that McCoist, Durrant and the rest of the good old boys will be given 'another season', will waste more money, will continue the laugh a minute approach to coaching and tactics that produced the spectacle of our unfit and tactically backward team being humiliated by Peterhead, and this time next year we will still have failed to address the fundamental problems. By which time we'll have lost the opportunity to get real change in place in enough time to make a difference before going back to the top league (assuming we can even get there by then).

So the Manager of our Club needs to speak to someone at Board level to (re)establish what budget he can operate with. Would have been far stronger if the 'someone' could have been named, or if the 'someone' had himself stepped forward to show some indication of proper leadership by providing a statement on how the process of signing players is to work now that CG has gone. Who is the 'someone' I wonder? When a CEO goes my usual experience is that the Chairman steps in to provide the active, visible, reassuring, commanding leadership and to take control of the helm until a new CEO is appointed. What have we heard so far? Is it onoy this quote from the Manager who is looking to speak to 'someone'? Are Supporters now left to visualise the Manager knocking on a series of Directors' doors or making calls to Directors to ask - are you the one who is in control of the budget for player spending for next season? Who will be the 'someone' who calls the Manager to his office or calls him on the mobile to say 'we have offers for our current players 'x' and 'y' and we will be accepting the offers'?

I would very much like to see decisive, proper leadership coming from the Rangers Board and to see it immediately in the aftermath of removing CG. Whether or not that is possible is another matter. Will be very interested to see who visibly takes the helm and if he can set a decisive, authoritative, credible tone and do so quickly. Season tickets have to be sold, and the whole message of the plan that the Manager said he was working on has to be sold. And sold well. I really do hope the 'someone' is of a calibre that can grip the situation and inspire solid confidence that the Rising will continue at pace.

Good Managers like eg from SPL Butcher, McCall, Adams, Lennon winning a trophy, AJ QOTS, how much have these clubs spent i am sure Butcher has had to build a new team from scratch , good Managers can do that...

We have a good squad of players i believe they need coached properly and managed and we would see a different team McCoist can't seem to do it.

Green said: ‘We’ve allocated £10m for Ally to spend on players as soon as he’s able to do that. But we’re not saying it’s £10m and only £10m — if Rangers fans buy season tickets next year, there’s another £20m there.

‘We have a transfer ban for another year but Ally and his team are looking at who is out of contract when we can sign pre-contract agreements in January then, on September 1, we can sign them.’

If Rangers do sign players on pre-contracts next month, no money can change hands until the end of the transfer ban in September, but Green still expects top players to jump at the chance.

and? Personally I would give Ally very little to spend, we dont need it to get us out the 2nd division and i think he should stand down by the end of next season, The greatest ever Ranger in my mind but never ever ever a Rangers manager....NEVER!!

Let our next manager spend it.
