Lennon - but this is good

Wake up and smell the Toffees

English don’t fancy Neil

HERE’S a thought.

If the Barclays Premier League offered Celtic a place in England’s top flight next season, would the Celtic hierarchy still have Neil Lennon in the Hoops dugout? Or would they go for a big name who’s been around the block down there?

It would be a tough call for Peter Lawwell who’s bright enough to recognise Lenny hasn’t been tested for much of his time in charge. And if leading Celtic into the last 16 of the Champions League was a minor miracle it still hasn’t put Neil on the radar down south. In the week southern pundits dismissed him as a serious contender for the Everton job, Lennon finds himself the biggest victim of Scottish football’s implosion. Yeah, even more so than Ally McCoist who’ll keep the sympathy vote for as long as the Ibrox directors fight like cat and dog. By contrast, Lennon has made a rod for his own back through his Champions League success. With the SPL now a formality for Celtic, Neil will be expected to do the business in Europe again. If he comes up short he’ll know all about it. Certainly, he’ll need another couple of foreign scalps if he’s to be taken seriously by England’s big hitters. Asked to comment on Lenny’s chances of replacing David Moyes at Goodison Park, Toffees’ legend Graeme Sharp was brutally frank: “I’d be very surprised if Neil got anywhere near Everton. He has done okay at Celtic, but I’m not sure he’s done enough to warrant the Everton job.” Ouch. For the avoidance of doubt big Sharpie is a Bluenose, but his assessment of Lennon’s credentials isn’t uncommon down south. Lennon has changed greatly in the last three years but he’s powerless to change the current perception of Scottish football in England. Arrogance is never in short supply south of the border. They’re convinced they have the best league in the world despite this season’s Champions League results.

But if that confidence is misjudged you can’t argue with their take on the Scottish game.

Where we once boasted de Boer, Viduka, Arteta, di Canio, Gascoigne, Laudrup, Larsson and Co, we now have a basket case of a league.

Lenny consistently makes a case for Scotland’s top division but you’d struggle to find a handful of SPL players who’d cut it in England’s Premier League.

You can bet your boots Lennon would be out of here pronto if he got the right offer from England but he has to avoid offending an adoring Celtic support.

When told he was the early bookies’ favourite for the Everton job he reverted to managerial double speak. While “flattered” to be linked with the Goodison vacancy, he said he still had work to do at Celtic.

If Neil can repeat his Champions League feat of last season he’ll be taken more seriously in England but the days of EPL clubs headhunting in Scotland are over.

Previously, they had no hesitation looking north. Everton hired Walter Smith on the back of his Rangers’ record while top-flight Bradford City took Jim Jefferies south 13 years ago.

Alex McLeish’s achievements with Scotland were enough to win him a place in England’s big league at Birmingham where Martin O’Neill was already in the Aston Villa dugout after leaving Celtic.

For the most part, the Championship has been a more realistic target for our managers.

Owen Coyle, Billy Davies, Paul Lambert and Malky Mackay made it all the way to the EPL but only through taking jobs in England’s second tier.

Even Gordon Strachan, with two Champions League last-16 appearances, had to settle for Championship strugglers Middlesbrough on his departure from Celtic.

Lennon intends to follow mentor Strachan south but the current state of our game doesn’t help his chances.

When Sunderland are hiring di Canio from Swindon with less than two years managerial experience, Neil must wonder what he needs to get into the mix.

For the moment the road to the Barclays Premier League appears to be closed at Carlisle.

Lennon may first have to get his hands dirty in the Championship, with Leicester City an option.

That looks beneath a man who outfoxed Barcelona on the biggest stage of them all, but it might be his only option.

So Lennon performs a "minor miracle" getting the tarriers to the last 16, Provan thinks he's due a chance in the Premiership because of one fluke result

Big Eck takes us into the last 16 on a shoestring budget but he only got the Birmingham job on the back of what he did with Scotland?
