In Spain, Barcelona fans are the seperatist idiots while Real Madrid have a history of being the team of the establishment and the establishment tended to keep the seperatists under control.

The first year I can really remember watching football Real Madrid won the Champions League with an awesome team that had Raul, Morientes, Redondo, Hierro and Carlos. I've always preferred them since then.

I don't think it's wise to conflate Catalan separatism with Scottish separatism or to take sides based on that. They're different issues.

I was watching Saturdays game in a pub and the guy at the table I'm pretty sure was one and he said at the end that it had been a poor game (obviously because Barca had been taught a lesson) ... as you say they do seem to identify with the poor downtrodden catalans

I think the whole papal thing goes deep into the subconscious in catholic countries for example the most successful clubs in both Spain and Argentina both play in basically all white as indeed do septic :-)

I'd guess a fair few Rangers fans go for Madrid because they're the Royal team or because Barca are the Catalan team or because the mhanks are trying their best to be loved by Barca.
