Probe into 'appalling' disorder after Hibs win Scottish Cup

The Scottish Football Association has said it was "appalled" by scenes of disorder after Hibs' historic victory over Rangers in the Scottish Cup final.

Fans spilled on to the pitch after the Edinburgh side beat the Ibrox club 3-2 with a late goal in injury time.

Rangers said some of their players and staff were assaulted. The club has condemned what it described as the "disgraceful behaviour of Hibs fans".

The SFA said a full investigation into the crowd trouble would be carried out.

Police Scotland described the behaviour of some fans as "totally unacceptable and inexcusable".

The force said a dedicated investigation team was being set up to identify those involved in acts of disorder and violence.

Hibs chairman Rod Petrie told BBC Scotland what happened was "deeply disappointing".

Scottish Football Association chief executive Stewart Regan said: "Scottish FA is appalled by the scenes of disorder on the field immediately after full time and at the contemptible behaviour that ensued.

"What should have been an historic, memorable Scottish Cup final will now, sadly, be remembered for all the wrong reasons.

"The Scottish FA, along with Police Scotland and the stadium management have initiated a full investigation into the scenes that unfolded to understand how such a volume of supporters were able to enter the field."

Rangers said some of their players and staff had been assaulted by Hibs fans as they tried to leave the pitch. The team received their runners-up medals in the dressing room.

As Hibs fans returned to the stands part of the pitch was ripped up and the goal posts were broken by people climbing on them.

The invasion delayed the presentation of the trophy and there was no lap of honour by the Hibernian players.

A statement from Rangers condemned the "disgraceful behaviour of Hibs fans".

A spokesman said: "Rangers players and staff were assaulted by these fans who invaded the pitch and in the interests of their safety could not return to the pitch for the medal presentation.

"There can be no place for the violent behaviour witnessed at the end of the final and Rangers fully expect the Scottish Football Association and Police Scotland to launch an investigation to find out where security measures failed.

"The club would like to commend Rangers fans for the restraint they showed under severe provocation."

In a post match interview with BBC Scotland, Hibs chairman Mr Petrie said: "It is deeply disappointing that this happened. It shouldn't have happened.

"The images should have been about the club celebrating the win as opposed to any other aspect of it.

"The fact that it has happened, then you have to look at what the response was to it and the response seemed to be entirely professional, to contain the incursions on to the pitch and eventually to put people back into their seats."

Ch Supt Kenny MacDonald of Police Scotland said: "Officers, including the force's mounted branch, responded and brought the matter under control as quickly as possible.

"We understand that feelings run high at these events and fans want to celebrate their team's win, however the reckless behaviour of fans entering the pitch is totally unacceptable and inexcusable. This created a significant safety issue.

"This action led to an outbreak of disorder between rival fans on the pitch. A dedicated investigation team is being set up to identify those who have carried out these acts of disorder and violence."

Police horses were last needed at the 1980 Scottish Cup final between Celtic and Rangers.

I thought the police and stewards got it spot on yesterday by nipping a potential drama in the bud, just imagine if the Hibs fans had got on to the park they may have assaulted our players and tried their utmost to spark a full scale riot, maybe even break the goalposts,our country is in safe hands with these fine fellows stepping instantly up to the mark.

Tell you what, amateur don't even come close, where did they go for the horses? Aintree.

The policing of the game was ABSOLUTELY pathetic. They were not prepared for a pitch invasion and the problems posed by it.

Laughable and sad if he was actually happy with the policing. After watching blow after blow being struck by fans on the pitch with no sign of order being restored I left the stadium and watched the police riot vans sitting in traffic hoping the trouble would be over by the time they arrived. While I admit no police force could have prevented the hibs fans pitch invasion their is no doubt the hibs fans blatant goading of the Rangers end would have come to nothing if the police had been active rather than belatedly reactive.

I've been at plenty of matches where, near the end, the polis and stewards have marched in and made themselves a heavy human barrier between crowd and pitch.

Obviously, to physically restrain thousands of people running onto the pitch is impossible but it always seemed to work as a visual/psychological deterrent.

As has been said already, there were plenty of bodies available, they just didn't bother deploying them where and when they were needed to prevent these muppets causing a near riot and embarrassing themselves to a global audience. SFA/polis/stewards and hibs all need to be held accountable for that.

If and when arrests are made, I would hope that they have the book thrown at them.

This cunt Kenny McDonald's should get his jitters for this .It was a fuck up .The horses came from the Mount Florida end .Strangely none from Hivs end .There would be no need for Police on horses over at the other end obviously .Our club simply have to go on the attack here .If they don't .They fail us all .

I watched a guy punch someone to the ground early doors ,be pulled away by a policemen only to turn round and floor another guy. The fact that he wasn't arrested maybe encouraged other fans to join in as the few police there were only wanted to keep fans apart rather than actually lift someone for assault which would have acted as a deterant.

I found this video on you tube at 00:15 you can see where hibs fans breached security and get onto the pitch. I don't think security expected a breach at the Hibs end. The focus was on the Rangers end. Once the horses got on to the pitch Hibs fans were contained quickly but it's the time before that where security failed our players. Hibs fans should never have been able to reach players leaving the pitch. We still don't know how bad their injuries are or whether they can play. The media also have a responsibility in this by fanning the flames of hatred towards Rangers. There is a need for guidelines on how they report and the use of emotive language in their stories. so that this hatred is defused.

As i came out after the game Crowds of Police were at our end laughing and joking as supporters told them they needed to be at the other side or inside the stadium.

They were to busy watching the big bad Rangers and gaurding the wee side streets.

The media,in particular,the BBC need pressed to tell the whole truth and not be allowed to 'hide' important evidence from the authorities.

The evidence is fully in place that we as a people,as supporters of Rangers Football Club,are to be demeaned,demonised and mocked.

I can't see this being dropped, the security breach happened at the national stadium. No matter how Mr Reagan tries to pass the buck, he and the SFA are ultimately responsible for ensuring player safety.

Ultimately the SFA should get the book thrown at them - it is their event and security was insufficient to stop all this happening.

The police need a fkn internal investigation, the incompetent pricks. Too focussed on the Rangers end to realise what was unfolding and to make a proper decision regarding a full deployment of police and stewards to the hibs end.

As for the security, it was all old men and blacks who probably can't get a job elsewhere and they're not going to get involved as its just appearance money.

Overall the police commander has full authority over everyone and like other grounds where mass tragedys have happened he or she has failed miserably and really should be stepping down.

This must also be the last nail in the coffin for regan but wee know the green brush will be sweeping into action.
