100%.

He won't be remembered the way he should be. Anyone can see that.

He'll have half the legacy he could have had. At best.

Even then, he won’t retire with a bad legacy and most people won’t nitpick in the same way.

At his peak nobody had the same accomplished style as him on an elite level. He would hit the ball past the best defenders in the world and get there first while they were still turning.

His explosiveness was frightening.

Seems to me that this can only be true if you think Bale was one of the two or three most talented players ever. Having twice the legacy Bale has today would easily put him in the top tier of greatest players of all time. Seems weird to me to expect that of a guy whose supreme attribute was his athleticism, and whose prime years were played out in one of the most hostile environments in football, in terms of attention, criticism etc.

Wingers are notoriously inconsistent anyway. British players are notoriously shit abroad. This one went abroad and won everything, at times eclipsing his teammate who was one of the five greatest players who ever lived.

Maybe half's an exaggeration, but he's a great footballer that let his career peter out from the age of 30. With the ability he had he should have had 4 or 5 more years, at least, of showing the world what he could do, instead from 30 he quite quickly faded away.

Before the world cup I was led to believe everything bad the media made about Qatar. Does the Qatarian views match with mine, No they don't but I must say I really have enjoyed this world cup and its been a lot better than Russia in my opinion.

Watched nearly every match and enjoyed a good 70% of them also. The BBCs coverage has been fucking dreadful during this world cup but ITV has been brilliant. And "I'll tell you something"  McCoist has been a brilliant listen.

Enjoying the football doesn't have any bearing on the relevance of the criticisms, does it? The criticism wasn't about the quality of the football. It's not like "Oh, at first I thought funding Al Qaeda and working migrants for pennies until they die was bad, but now that Richarlison scored a worldie I can see that's not true."

Is this a serious post?

Of course not but for weeks and months leading up to the world cup even over the last couple of years it is all I have seen. Soon as the tournament started its not been the worst World Cup. Merely stating that I have enjoyed it. Don't get your knickers in a twist because I have enjoyed something you clearly have not.

Mate, I don’t know what you’ve been watching but this is the worst World Cup in living memory for me and I’ve seen a few. I’ll have some of what you’re smoking. 👍

I am off work currently after going through some hard times personally so while Rangers are not playing it has helped me.

I am enjoying it though. I just don't see how the two things are connected. You said that before the tournament you were led to believe everything bad about Qatar that was in the media, implying you no longer believe those things. I'm just curious as to how the enjoyability of the World Cup has rebutted those criticisms. Acting as though putting on a good World Cup disproves those criticisms is the sort of thing people like John Barnes are getting paid by Qatar to say, so I hope you're getting your invoice in too.

I'm also stuck in the house and have watched most of the games and think most  have been poor, too many players past their best and their replacements not of the same calibre. Its been pretty poor so far.

Never once said all the games have been good to be fair. They have been some brutal disasters but have enjoyed seeing some new players and some upsets and some great goals and matches. 70% of me has enjoyed it and some of that may be because I am in the house and have nothing to do. The other 30% has been fucking eye bleeding.

Really my notifications beg to differ.

Some posters, like me, have pointed out that your enjoyment of the world cup doesn't make criticism of Qatar invalid. Other posters have disagreed with you that it's a good World Cup. Nobody is denying your right to an opinion on it or being a "cock" about it. It's a discussion board. If you don't want people to your posts with other opinions, why post here?

Barnes is so weird on this stuff. He chops and changes his views all the time and he's incomprehensible on most things.

I was hoping he was going to do a video from his lounge defending the Qataris with his porn DVDs on full display again.
