Zenit fans stop Dick from buying Black players

he "dark skin question" is being pushed slowly but insistently ever since it got clear that this year Zenit gets anyone whoever has misfortune to be on its way. From one side it is a ridiculous matter but from the other side I see it as a well-planned discreditation of a leading Russian club, currently representing Russian Federation on the international scene - and over it a discreditation of the country itself. The club management and the Football Union either don't see it or they wrongly hold it as a non-important.

The "dark skin question" itself is plain idiotic and it only shows the level of loss of self-identification of the modern Western Europe.

Just in case, I an reminding that people of African origin are not a national minority - and especially an abused national minority - of the Russian Federation. If Zenit was a team from the US or South Africa then a full absence of black players would be suspicious. At the same time to harass a team from St.Petersburg, Russia with "Where are your blacks?" questions is a clinical case of progressing idioticy.

Besides that it is presumed, I guess, that Ukrainians, Norwegians, Croats, Koreans or Belgians are still the same Russian: and only no matter how and why obtained black person can possibly prove the real internationality of a team? Such act of the lunatic reasoning has nothing to do with the Western Europe itself, it is an ugly copy of the political correctness from the US. This is why I mentioned the "loss of self-identification of the modern Western Europe" some above.

Personally, as a Zenit fan, I feel myself humiliated by insinuations of some not named here half-literal bastards having - deeply alas - access to public media so trying to represent myself and my beloved team nearly as a fascistic-nationalistic gang. Once I run to my former students for help to prepare an e-card for Kim Dong Djin. Now I got explained that Kim doesn't have the right skin color: it is yellow while the black is needed. So we need to by one for the show case and start to love him alone. Europe will come later to check out..

Think we have to give these lads ome leeway guys, their English is far far better than my Russian :)

They may even be using a translation program to interpret.

Don't be too harsh, at least they're giving us an even perspective (tu)

Racism goes both ways. Its entirely wrong, but it exists with some people.

The thing is, how do we stop it ?

All the best players are black these days aswell.....If they want to achieve their goal of being one of the top 3 clubs in europe their fans will need to come out of the dark ages.

I don't doubt that there are racists within the Zenit supporters. There are unsavoury supporters of every club in Europe, our own has its fair share of idiots. I don't believe for a second that it would stop Zenit from signing black players though, I'll be taking the article with a massive pinch of salt.

It's probably all a ploy by Advocaat to steal all our black players from under our noses!

I'm an American Zenit fan who lived in St. Petersburg for a couple of year and had season tickets to Zenit matches. Fist, I've never seen the hoods that one person suggested are worn at matches - I don't think that sort of thing would escape the watchful eyes of UEFA and FIFA. This issue is more complex than the level at which it is currently being discussed. Do black-skinned player play in the Russian Premier Liga? Yes. Do black players play on other St. Petersburg professional sports teams? Yes, a number of African-Americans play or have played on the major Eurobasket teams in St. Petersburg. In fact, an African-American, J.R. Holden, recently was given expedited Russian citizenship so he could play on the national basketball team. So I wouldn't say that the attitudes you are ascribing to Russian sport in this discussion pervade it in the way that many are implying. Also Zenit have been very close to signing a number of black-skinned footballers, the most notable of which was Ze Roberto. Russian sports media reported that the only reason that he signed with Bayern was that he didn't want to play in the cold climate and his wife didn't want to live in Russia.

As for Zenit fans, like any football match you get your usual cross-section of society at the matches. There are some, like Nationalist parties on your isle that, view football as a racial passion play. I have heard a few fans in the lower-priced ends of the stadium making monkey noises one time. There is an old saying that some fans repeat that "Black is not in the colors of Zenit." Some use it ironically, some don't. Is it despicable when it is used as a racial epithet? Yes. Is it the opinion of all of the fans? No. Is it the opinion of the club? No. In their international tune-up Zenit had a controlled match against an African team, that's not the act of a racist management.

There are a couple of important things to understanding about the transfers that Zenit has sought out since Advocaat came to the squad though - they are international and Zenit fans have reacted tolerantly to having two Koreans and a Turkish player added to the team. There is also a limit on foreign players that a squad can field in Russian premier league matches. This squad was built to win the Russian league title, therefore a number of the signings have been capped Russian players - the signings of Zyrianov, Fayzulin, Shirokov, and Pavel Pogrebnyak, as well as the renegotiation of Arshavin's lavish contract all come to mind. Also the team was formerly coached by Vlatsimil Peterzhela, a Czech specialist, therefore there are a lot of Czechoslovak players on the side including Kamil Chontofolsky, Radek Sirl, and Tomas Hubochan. Other signings show a desire to go international Dominguez (Argentina) and Kim Dong Jin and Lee Ho (Korea). Other signings were simply very good players - Fatih Tekke and Timoshchyuk could play on any number of European sides and chose Zenit. Ricksen was a steal (granted - you run at him and he flies at you) and obviously connected to Advocaat. Lombaerts was a highly regarded player as a youth and we beat out a number of sides to sign him. Are any of these players dark-skinned? No. Is there a logical reason for their signing aside from their skin color? Yes.

Also, Zenit are trying to build a side that consistently competes with sides like Rangers and Bayern in European club competitions. They are not a team with a great roots in European success. We have played well in the last 10 years, but we are not Spartak, yet. Until Gazprom poured their oil money into the team we didn't have scouts in Latin America or even Western Europe. We relied on our youth program that pumped out quality Russian players the likes of Alexander Kerzhakov and Adrei Arshavin, to name a few. Prior to that we used the personal connections of the manager and the clubs knowledge of the Russian league to sign players. That doesn't make it easy to recruit black players.

It denigrates the skill that our side have shown in their masterful counter-attacks and goals against the run of play over the last legs of this competition to bring up the skin color of the side at this stage.

Anyone who has that attitude is beyond small minded.

Racism is racism no matter which direction it's going in.

But it is a problem if anyone of one skin colour attacks someone of another, and that is deemed racism even if racism doesn't come into it. Society has much growing up to do.
