Stoke target McCulloch

STOKE CITY are set to test Rangers’ mettle with a £1.5million bid for long-term target Lee McCulloch.

The Premiership new boys were keen to land the 30-year-old in the last transfer window, but were warned off by Ibrox boss Walter Smith.

Since then McCulloch’s season has been curtailed by a knee injury and he has only returned to full fitness in recent weeks.

The former Scottish international has made it on to the bench in recent weeks and played the full 90 minutes as an emergency centre-half at the weekend in the 2-1 win over St Mirren, but Stoke City boss Tony Pulis is monitoring the situation closely.

If McCulloch doesn’t break back into the Rangers first team then Pulis feels he can convince him to return to England.

Rangers boss Smith would prefer to keep his former Wigan star but is also aware he has to try and reduce his wage bill.

He would prefer to move on the likes of Brahim Hemdani, Christian Dailly, Charlie Adam and Jean-Claude Darcheville and is hoping other clubs will show interest in them in January.

If that fails to happen then he could reluctantly sell McCulloch because he knows he is adequately covered in the midfield area, even with Kevin Thomson out injured.

Can't see it tbh.

- Our manager rates him.

- He's at the club he loves.

- He moved from England to be closer to his family as his wife was homesick or ill or whatever it was?
