IFK Gothenburg defender Mattias Bjarsmyr has hinted at an interest in joining SPL club Rangers.

Bjarsmyr, 22, was linked with Walter Smith's side in the summer after he claimed they had made an approach for his services.

A move failed to materialise but fresh speculation has linked Gers with a bid for the Sweden international in the January transfer window.

"Rangers are a big club and a good team. Everyone who wants to achieve something is looking for that," he told Goteborgs-Posten.

A number of clubs, including Feyenoord, Anderlecht and AZ Alkmaar, are also reportedly keen on Bjarsmyr.

God only knows what happened to the last IFK Gothenburg defender we signed.

um, I would have thought, buying u21 players, who have a bit of pedigree, would be a good thing? long term planning etc? Of course, because its WS, nobody can see that. We have, in the main, a very young squad, so, when he goes at the end of the season, there is no need for a huge rebuilding exercise

Something that's often forgotten. Walter has brought in quite a lot of younger players such as Thomson, Lafferty, Whittaker, Edu and Broadfoot. Maybe some of them aren't working out, but we'll see...

SWEDISH international defender Mattias Bjarsmyr has welcomed the prospect of a move to Rangers in the January transfer window.

Gers boss Walter Smith has been linked with the £2million-rated IFK Gothenburg centre-half.

And the player, who could be allowed to come to Scotland on loan until the end of the season, would consider a switch to the Glasgow giants.

He said: "Rangers are a big club. Everyone who wants something with their career wants to join a club like that."

Could be a loan.

Rangers have had a loan deal rejected.

Meanwhile, Smith has had a loan bid for Swedish international Mattias Bjarsmyr thrown out by IFK Gothenburg.

Smith asked if he could bring the twice-capped centre-half, 21, to Glasgow for the rest of the season. But Gothenburg are thought to want an up-front payment in the region of £2.5million for their prize asset, whose contract expires at the end of 2009.

And they have vowed not to budge over their demands for the Sweden Under-21s skipper.

Sporting director Hakan Mild said: “We are not interested in a loan deal. Such a move has never been in the equation for us.”

It seems certain Bjarsmyr will be sold this month. The player and Gothenburg are at loggerheads after he rejected a new deal.

He was left fuming when Gothenburg placed such a massive fee on his head.

Earlier this week Bjarsmyr had admitted he would be keen on a move to Rangers.

But Gothenburg don’t want to lose him for nothing so will look to flog him elsewhere.

Reports in Sweden claim he will move to either AZ Alkmaar or FC Groningen in Holland

We will operate they way we normally do in these situations. Offer crappy bids under the value that the club wants and string it out for weeks, then he will join another team. :(

Whilst saying we tried our best but cant compete in the new market and settle for a scottish player instead doh

RANGERS were last night warned they will have to meet IFK Gothenborg’s £2 million asking price if they want to land star defender Mattias Bjarsmyr.

Reports in Sweden had suggested the Swedes might be prepared to let him go on loan, with a view to a permanent transfer to be paid at the end of the season.

That option, though, has been blown out of the water by Gothenborg sporting director Hakan Mild, who has insisted the Swedish international will only be sold if the price is right.

IFK also know there is no shortage of offers as AZ Alkmaar, Feyernoord, Anderlecht and Red Bull Salzburg are also interested.

Mild warned: "We’re not interested in letting Mattias away on a loan deal.

“That has never even been up for discussion.”

Ibrox boss Walter Smith also has an interest in Spartak Moscow defender Martin Stranzl and Hearts captain Christophe Berra but he can’t raise the transfer money to buy either.

Before he could make his move he has to offload several of his fringe stars.

Alan Gow looks likely to return to the Championship with Wolves but Smith also wants rid of Brahim Hemdani, Christian Dailly, Charlie Adam, and Andy Webster.

The Light Blues are also prepared to sell Lee McCulloch and Demarcus Beasley if the price is right.

Marseille could also make an offer for long-term target Madjid Bougherra but Smith would prefer to keep a hold of his summer signing from Charlton.
