David James needs slapped. You know he can be blinding some days but the guy is a real twat. Always making retarded mistakes. He just cost his side a point there tonight. They could well of needed that point come the end of the season. Now they got Arsenal on saturday.

Saturday 22nd August round-up

Arsenal 4 Portsmouth 1

Birmingham 0 Stoke 0

Hull City 1 Bolton 0

Man City 1 Wolverhampton 0

Sunderland 2 Blackburn 1

Wigan 0 Man Utd 5

Manchester United recovered from their Burnley blip by beating Wigan, while Arsenal continued their scoring streak against Portsmouth.

Manchester City's summer of spending continues to pay dividends as they edged past Wolves at Eastlands, while Sunderland saw off Blackburn at the Stadium of Light.

Hull City responded to the midweek home humbling by Spurs to overcome Bolton, as Birmingham and Stoke could not be separated at St Andrews.

Premier League champions Manchester United were frustrated for the opening period by Wigan at the DW Stadium before finding their form after the interval to cruise to a 5-0 success.

Wayne Rooney scored twice for Sir Alex Ferguson's men with Dimitar Berbatov adding a superb second following an excellent team move in between.

And the icing on the cake came in the closing stages with Michael Owen grabbing his first goal for the club with a superb finish, before Nani lashed home a last-gasp free-kick.

Arsenal put hapless Portsmouth to the sword at Emirates Stadium with Abou Diaby scoring twice in the first half on his 100th appearance for the Gunners.

Younes Kaboul outjumped Manuel Almunia to pull one back before the break, but William Gallas' comical close-range finish via his shin and face and Aaron Ramsey's clinical fourth made the game safe.

City triumph

Emmanuel Adebayor grabbed his second Premier League goal in as many games as Manchester City triumphed 1-0 over Wolves at Eastlands.

The Togo international beat Wolves keeper Wayne Hennessey at his near post in the 17th minute after being played into space by fellow summer signing Carlos Tevez's clever pass.

Sunderland hit back from the setback of going a goal down to claim all three points thanks to a 2-1 victory against Blackburn at the Stadium of Light.

Gael Givet (21) opened his account for Rovers with a low effort from the edge of the box only for Kenwyne Jones to out-fox Paul Robinson before the break before beating him with a header in the second period.

Kamel Ghilas opened his account for Hull City with the only goal of the game at the KC Stadium to leave Bolton pointless and goalless after two games.

Birmingham and Stoke City shared the spoils after a stalemate at St Andrews, but the Potters saw striker James Beattie limp out of the action early on with a knee problem.

Man Utd finally got their act together today!

Do you still expect Sir Alex to bring in another top quality attacking player?

I still think they'll need one for Europe and the bigger teams in the league.

(tu)

If Rooney or Berbatov go down, they'll be desperately short of quality attacking options.

He's still maintaining he won't, yet he's also admitting he needs to address the goal scoring problem. Aparently last season was Man Utd's worst goal difference for fucking ages!

I'd actually never have guessed that.

I thought they were quite good, but i suppose when they conceded, they conceded heavily. Liverpool and Hull got quite a few past them.

I can still see him bringing in a winger, or a creative goalscoring attacking midfielder.

I still rate Michael Owen highly, but they'll need another as backup.

Macheda isn't good enough for that role yet.

They also went through a spell of one or two goal victories. They need to score more!

They need someone Lampard-esque!

This is something else I was thinking. Man Utd's midfield is good but...

Chelsea - Lampard, Essien

Liverpool - Gerrard

Arsenal - Fabregas

4 players who can stake a claim to be the best CM in England and one of the best in Europe. Man Utd just don't have that someone in there that a little bit special

These were the four players i thought about when I was thinking of what type of player Man Utd needed.
