5cotland 71
Nikica Jelavic has arrived in Glasgow to undergo a medical, with a view to joining Rangers from Rapid Vienna. He was left out of Rapid's squad after refusing to play in Thursday's Europa League tie against Aston Villa. "We have agreed a fee with Rapid for Nikica Jelavic," chief executive Martin Bain told the Rangers website. "And we have also agreed personal terms in principle. When he arrives we will hope to complete these and he will also undergo a medical." Negotiations with Rangers broke down last week after the Austrian club rejected a bid. However, the 24-year-old's decision to leave Rapid's training ground ahead of Thursday's match with Villa saw the Austrians reluctantly relaxing their stance. MY SPORT: DEBATE Give your reaction to this story Rapid's president Rudolf Edlinger, who said the striker will be joining the Scottish champions, indicated that Jelavic had been suspended by the club for his refusal to train. Edlinger told the club's website: "Contrary to all expectations, Nikica Jelavic said that he did to not want to play for SK Rapid. "It is a shock to the entire Rapid-family. Rapid is a club with heart and emotion. "But if someone on his own at such short notice, says he does not want to play, then he can go because he lets down not only the team but also the whole club. "I think that our fans will understand the decision." Croatia international Jelavic, who scored 21 goals last season including three against Celtic in the Europa League, is viewed as a replacement for Kris Boyd, who left Ibrox for Middlesbrough under freedom of contract. Jelavic has played for Rapid in European competition this season but will still be eligible to feature for Rangers in the Champions League if he completes his protracted move, regardless of whether the Austrians overcome Villa to reach the group stages of the Europa League. Rangers manager Walter Smith also lost Nacho Novo before the start of the season and has moved to bolster his attacking ranks with the purchase of James Beattie from Stoke and the loan signing of Manchester City's Vladimir Weiss. Smith has also been assessing trialists Georgie Welcome, a Honduras international, Arsenal youngster Nacer Barazite and his fellow Dutchman Etienne Esajas, formerly of Sheffield Wednesday. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/r/rangers/8893879.stm

M-89 549
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/aug/20/nikica-jelavic-rangers-walter-smith"Walter Smith expects Nikica Jelavic to complete his long-awaited move to Rangers this afternoon. The Scottish champions confirmed last night that he would be arriving in Glasgow to undergo a medical and thrash out personal terms. His move to Ibrox appeared imminent when the 24-year-old forward refused to play for Rapid Vienna in last night's Europa League play-off against Aston Villa. Rangers have reportedly agreed a fee of £4m for the Croatian, who will be their third signing following the captures of James Beattie and Vladimir Weiss."It's been quite a protracted one," said Smith. "There has been a few hitches and (the chief executive) Martin Bain has had to work extremely hard to get that one over the line."We will hopefully do that this afternoon and fingers crossed that's the case. The player over that time has always said that he would like to join us and hopefully that can be completed this afternoon."
