SPL clubs to stop wearing poppies on shirts for Remembrance Sunday

Oct 11 2010

FOOTBALLERS in the SPL will no longer wear poppies on their shirts around Remembrance Sunday.

Poppy appeal charity bosses say the tribute during matches has "run its course" and are seeking other ways of showing respect.

Celtic, who have been hit by protests against the poppies by some supporters, were quick to reveal that they plan to promote a different charity from November 2011.

They said: "Celtic will be giving another charity the opportunity to feature on the Celtic shirt in 2011 to raise awareness of their work."

Poppyscotland intend to involve the SPL clubs in other forms of promotion but it is not known if Celtic, who the charity said had been "very supportive", will participate in any form of remembrance in 2011.

They cannot, and will not be able to stop us. I think a fan petition to the club demanding that we retain the wearing of the poppy is in order. The fallen deserve to be remembered and as the years go by it becomes increasingly important that we never forget.

The only thing that has 'run its course' is the tims self-made myth about how great they think they are. This is potentially the biggest act of sweeping under the carpet in the history of Scottish football and those responsible need to be called out.

Has remembering the fallen run its course as well??? This is a pathetic, ridiculous decision, and those that made it should be ashamed of themselves. It is a slap in the face to all of those who so selflessly made the ultimate sacrifice.

For f*cks sake - What is this country coming to that we cant honour our Troops past and present? Its at times like these that it makes me swell with pride that I'm a Rangers Supporter because this sitution is a no-brainer with our Club and Support - We WILL wear poppy's and we WILL honour our war dead.
