David Melvin reports from Murray Park

Davie Weir, Matt McKay and Jamie Ness made returns from injury as a strong Rangers reserve side cruised to a 4-0 win over Gateshead this afternoon.

Weir and Ness featured for 45 minutes while McKay completed the full match. Lee McCulloch also got an hour under his belt and Lee Wallace continued the comeback he started in the first team with a first half appearance at left back.

The starting eleven for Tommy Wilson's side featured seven full internationals and four under-21 caps and the experience showed.

Ness had the best chance of the opening stages but he shot over the top from the left channel with both John Fleck and David Healy in better positions.

However the Gers didn't have to wait long for the breakthrough with McCulloch rifling home from the edge of the box on 11 minutes after neat play from Alejandro Bedoya.

That settled down the home side and Gateshead got increasingly frustrated as they repeatedly surrendered possession.

Rangers almost increased their lead twice around the half hour mark when Bedoya and Healy came close.

The American, one of the seven full internationals in the starting line-up, looked like he had done enough having gone round the keeper, but his shot was headed off the line

Healy then cracked the post having also rounded the keeper. But the Ulsterman wasn't to be denied and grabbed the Light Blues' second just before the break.

The interval signalled the end of the action for Ness, Weir and Wallace while McCulloch, Kirk Broadfoot and Healy completed an hour.

The changes disrupted the rhythm a little but Rangers continued to press and were rewarded when McKay volleyed home from the edge of the area with 15 minutes remaining.

Bedoya had done well after moving in to a forward role and his penetrating run forced a chance that was well blocked, but the ball fell kindly for McKay to volley in to an unguarded net.

But the Aussie's impressive finish was to be outdone by Rhys McCabe who finished the scoring with just a few minutes remaining.

The ball again broke kindly 25 yards out and the young midfielder bulleted his shot in to the top corner to the acclaim of his more senior team mates on the side lines.

The quality of finishing would have pleased the watching Ally McCoist, but he will have been equally encouraged by the continuing return of a number of first team players to add competition to the squad.

Rangers: Adam; Broadfoot (Cole 60), Perry, Weir (McMillan 46), Wallace (Kerkar 46); Bedoya, McCulloch (Mitchell 60), Ness (McCabe 46), McKay; Healy (Hegarty 60), Fleck.

All good news apart from McCulloch getting a run out. What's the point? We know what he can do. Fouls, points and passes the ball sideways/backwards, fouls, points and passes....you get the picture

Aye your right. Why even bother getting him fit. We should just tell him to take the rest of the year off while we pay his wages. Who cares if we get a spat of injuries in midfield, theres no point asking McCulloch to play..
